I'm working on a little tune here, and the comp is pretty much done (75% maybe) but I can't decide what to use on top, a vocal line or just a guitar instrumental melody of some sort. Any suggestions? You have a prominent, "melodic" part throughout (at the beginning, it's the wah guitar sound). Any vocal or guitar line would be competing with that for space. I'd just make that lead part a little more compelling, and leave it as is. It sounds really cool--reminds me of "Contusion" off of Songs in the Key of Life. I've decided to ask a girl to sing over it, and maybe remove some of the guitars/synths, as you mentioned i may need to free up some space. You just need to get a Chaka Khan style vocal track on top (maybe eq the bass a little as well) and this will be huge in the clubs. Don't worry about space. Chaka can create her own space.
