Members Fagmotron 3000
I just got a slightly used closed back Avatar 2x12 with a V30 and a G12H and I want to break in the speakers. The problem is I am on the second floor of a 3 floor complex and cannot crank the amp enough to break these things in. I was thinking I could hook the speakers up the to amp in my car and blast it while I am driving. I have an amp running 150 watts bridged to my sub in my car on a low pass Xover. I could make it fullpass easily and hook my cab up to the amp but be relatively easy on it because it is a 60 watt cab in this configuration. Now that I think about it, it wouldn't put out near 150 watts because the cab is 16 ohm, and my sub is 4 ohm, so it should be pretty darn safe. Thoughts? Members thenakedarab
Just get a cheap speaker cable, and cut off the end on one side so you can run it off one side of your stereo, or simply get a mini to 1/4 cable, and hook up your ipod or cd player through your amps loop return. Members BadCompany89
Can't you take it to someone else's place where it would be okay to crank it?
Members greg apocalypse
Go ahead and try that, and tell me how it is, because I don't think I'd try it.

I already have a couple of those cords rigged up from when I had my PA head running regular stereo speakers for practice vocals. That will be the money route. As for breaking it in somewhere else, I'm not in a band now so I don't have a practice space, and my parents wouldn't want it blasting in their house. I guess I was just kinda speaking out loud with this post. LOL. I'm just going to go ahead and do it. The question is, how long will I have to run the speakers loud for proper break in? It varies from speaker to speaker. You'll hear it when it happens, by twenty hours you should hear it start to loosen up, and by fifty hrs it should be pretty well broken in. Members BadCompany89
Here's what celestion has to say about breaking in speakers:How do I break in my speakers? Important Note! Before breaking it in it's advisable to "warm up" the speaker gently for a few minutes with low-level playing or background hum.Break in a speaker with a fat, clean tone: turn up the power amp volume to full, and control the level with the preamp gain. Use a level that will be quite loud, but not painful in a normal size room. Have the bass and mid up full, and the treble at least half. On your guitar, use the middle pick up position (if your guitar has more than one pick up) and play for 10-15 minutes using lots of open chords, and chunky percussive playing. This will get the cone moving, and should excite all the cone modes and get everything to settle in nicely. The speaker will continue to mature over the years, but this will get it 95% of the way to tonal perfection in the shortest time.
Members Fagmotron 3000
Here's what celestion has to say about breaking in speakers: Awesome. So if it only takes that long, I should be able to just do it by playing guitar at my parents. Thanks.

No problem. Tell us how it goes if you try that method, I'm curious as to how well it works.
