Emotion Sickness (AGAIN)

So, yes... we know the title has been used before but... well, I kinda want to do a modern take on Motown. Sort of Stevie's Uptight, Everything's Alright. So I ditched my earlier stab at it and got this at lunch, here's what I got so far...

Emotion Sickness

Are you sick-sick or just love-sick

Is it the flu or just a broken heart

Add it up, do the arithmetic

One into two then two apart

Emotion sickness

Riding the crest of a wave

Emotion sickness

No way to behave

Emotion sickness

Gonna dig you up a young man's grave

Pull the covers up to your chin

But you can't hide from the light of day

Dude, even Ray Charles can see the shape you're in

Trying to make the hurt go'way

Emotion sickness

Riding the crest of a wave

Emotion sickness

No way to behave

Emotion sickness

Gonna dig you up a young man's grave

Are you sick-sick or just love-sick

Some kinda virus or is it all in your head

Shake it off man, now there's the trick

Go get a little angry (lovin'?) instead

Emotion sickness

Riding the crest of a wave

Emotion sickness

No way to behave

Emotion sickness

Gonna dig you up a young man's grave

No?

No?

Not no, yes. With maybe a few changes...

Are you sick-sick or just love-sick

Is it the flu or just a broken heart

Add it up, do the arithmetic

One into two then two apart

Emotion sickness

You got tossed off a wave

Emotion sickness

No way to behave

Emotion sickness

Gonna put you in a young man's grave

Pull the covers up to your chin

But you can't hide from the light of day

Dude, even Stevie Wonder sees the shape you're in

Trying to make the hurt go'way

Emotion sickness

You got tossed off a wave

Emotion sickness

No way to behave

Emotion sickness

Gonna put you in a young man's grave

Are you sick-sick or just love-sick

Some kinda virus or is it all in your head

Shake it off man, now there's the trick

Get yourself some angry lovin' instead

Emotion sickness

You got tossed off a wave

Emotion sickness

No way to behave

Emotion sickness

Gonna put you in a young man's grave.

To be completely honest, I'm not a huge fan of the phrase "emotion sickness." I get it is a play on motion sickness and do think it's clever, but to me it sounds like it should involve the internet somehow.

On to the lyric. The verses are fantastic especially given the motown feel your going for.... I could see Sam Cooke singing that "Are you sick-sick (with an accent and horn stab on the second sick)... *slight pause* Or just love sick"

The chorus could still use some work.

"Riding the crest of a wave" sounds like fun. I know it could be a wave of sickness, but to me it doesn't go with what your saying.

If you're in the sea

Emotion sickness

Pounded by the cresting waves

Emotion sickness

No way to behave

Emotion sickness

Unless you want to call the sea your grave (not sold on this line either)

or if you're on the sea

Emotion sickness

bouncing with the cresting waves

Emotion sickness

Only remembering what you gave

Emotion sickness

No way to behave

or maybe "thrown from" tossed off (at least in this country) can have a very different meaning
;)

Bwah-hah-hah! Yeah, tossed off = not good. (thanks stick)

But Lee, that's great what you've done there. That really kicks it into the direction I was going with it. So yeah, this light, Motowny thing about love sickness and a bro trying to help out a bro. Get outta bed, dick! With out the "tossing" off course. :) Stevie instead of Ray? Cause... of the Uptight mention I made or for some other reason?

Angry lovin'? Sounds like something I'd say. I love that! I'm bad. So are you.

And then Rhino, your point about what he's doing on that wave. Knocked off the wave. Tossed off was good except for the masturbatory allusions. I can work on that (no, not that). Something to say he was riding a rough wave and he was knocked off.

Hah! I love that. I heard it from your page and it's good. It'll be done. Love it. (Kinda James B. too) So a big sting^, drop the beat wihtout losiong any bars then back in. The cool thing is I get to do it again in the third verse. YEAH! Hwuh!

Oh-oh... I'm hearing Outcast.

Are you sick-sick... or just love-sick

Some kinda virus; is it all in your head

Shake it off man, now there's the trick

Get yourself a little bit'a nasty instead

Yeah, but I'm not even sure I like "angry lovin'." So "bit'a nasty" seems over the top.

But, hey, that's me. I'm only cynical about love because I'm a hopeless romantic.

I didn't address that but I will now... I hear ya. I really want to write something that will be noticed. I would love Usher to say, Man, this will be my hip Outcast thang. That's what I'm going for here. Like country has it's slick turns of phrase. So does R & B. And I'm much more into the Outcast sense of humor and kinda see a way I could wedge myself in here. Or not. But that's the aim. HEY! NOTICE ME!!!
