Hawaiian Music

My assumption is that it is based on the same 8 note scale as all western music. I wouldn't think the chords would change too much. From what I've heard there are a good bit of 7ths.

 

It think what will make songs sound Hawaiian has more to do with instrumentation and how you're strumming.

Yeah, I don't particularly think there are chords or progressions favored by Hawaiian musicians. There are feels, and as Rhino says, instrumentation,  and of course subject matter, but other than that stuff, you're really talking very trad folk harmony here.

 

I gotta say though, you never really appreciate that music enough till you hear it in its element. Sipping a beer in small town Hilo on the big island and hearing the locals sing and play... great. I'll have that memory forever.
