Should I Take Back the Vypyr 15 and get a better amp?

Playing with this more and more, the preamp circuit is really cool, but this has to be the absolute worst AMP in history.

A crappy 8" speaker, I'm always fighting strange resonances and trying to fix HOLES in the EQ. It plays ok at really low volume, but at normal room volume, it start to sound ratty. The cleans always have too much presence, and not enough cut, even if I dime the mids and roll back the treble.

Move the bass past 4 and the thing booms like a half-stack wannabe.

I have heard lots of better practice amps that do cleans a whole lot better.

The cleans are abysmal.

Should I take it back and get a Fender? I could use my ME-50 thorugh it. Or maybe upgrade to a Vypyr 30?

Maybe a speaker upgrade will fix it. Anyone upgraded the speaker?

I didnt want to spend $200 on a practice amp.

My guess is its an 8" speaker and what kind of 8" speaker you have.

Why don't you just try out the bigger vypyrs and see if that works better.

And I agree with the vox ad comment. Those things handled cleans-rock very well. The Vypyr definitely has it better for brootz though.

I know what you mean about the low end EQ. It {censored}ing sucks. There are some very nice sounds, but they are very bright and almost all upper mids, no warmth whatsoever. I hated it for that.

Get a vox valvetronix VT series, they dont have that low end mess of an EQ.

Second time someone has suggested Vox VT amp...OP seriously get one.

OK, im going to GC tomorrow to try it out.. If I like it, back goes the Vypyr. May try the Vypyr 30 too.

The vypyr has so much potential, its just such a bad AMP.

Oh and OP, if you get the 30w it has a power attenuator in the back, I THINK, idk if Vox has newer models that don't, but when I got my 15w it didnt but the 30watts did.

OK, let's face your problems:

- The Vypyr rattles: combo amps do rattle, that's why halfstacks where invented

- It booms too much if you move the bass above 4: don't move it above 4

- You heard lots of better practice amps that do cleans a whole lot better: why did you get the Vypyr then?

- You think that the cleans are abysmal: same as above

The Vypyr is a beginner level modelling amp for people who start out playing or a practice amp for people who need an amp for very low volumes.

It costs 100$, what do you expect?

You get what you pay for.

Exactly what did you think it would do, for $100 ??

Just basic practice amp stuff. you know. Like balanced tone. Not booming.

I guess its ok for $100. I loved it for a few days until I tried to get a nice clean tone. It can get on OK clean on DLX green, but the higher registers are like "plink" "plink" "plink", while the lower notes are all "boommm" "boommm". Cant get the eq right.

Then I tried to play louder, and none of my low volume EQ settings sound right loud.

I havent played a practice amp in 20 years.
