Perhaps I'm uninitiated... is it customary to take a cabinet out of the box and take a screwdriver to it immediately?

Yes! :)
All these questions would have come up, otherwise.
What speakers are in it?
Is it made of Plywood or MDF?
Does it have a center brace?
How thick is the ply?
Is it front or rear loaded?
etc... etc...

This way people can see for themselves.

You'll see the same thing over in the Guitar forum.
Guys, popping off the back plates to see what caps and pots are used.
Popping out the neck pickup to see if it has a long tenon and how thick the maple cap is on their new guitars.
And so on.

I've had one of those since 1997, an MTS, I really like it. But like any gear, its got its own sound, and you have to learn to work with it. Mine is *CHUNKY*, if you're into palm muted stuff, its like a punch in the chest (especially with the MTS head), and that's usually tight punch. But because of that, you need to pull some of the lows out, or its gets muddy. I think I have their BR12's in mine, but they're many years old by now. I'm sure it will last forever.

Thanks, Grub.

Wife went shopping.
So, I plugged in my Blue Carvin and cranked up the V3 head and cab.
Sounding oh so sweet.
I've been breaking in the speakers for the last few days.
Now I finally got a chance to crank it up with the guitar.
The V30's are breaking in very nicely.

How anyone can say a V3 rig doesn't have enough crunch or chug is beyond me.

I'm loving this rig.
