In all seriousness, the terminal is your best friend. JBecker is right on the money with this suggestion. In Windows, OSX, and Linux alike I have to spend several hours getting everything set up how I like, and even then, things are always evolving. Linux is the best from initial start because the stock software is closer to what I use than anything else and package management = awesome.
