Members madryan
The 1984 Dune movie is not that great IMO. Instead check the 3 part Dune mini-series from 2000.Of recent movies Source Code, In Time and Iron Sky are worth watching. What screwed Lynch ultimately was the limitations of making a movie that could be seen in a theater in one shot without an intermission. Had he been able to do the movie properly as a multi-part series like the new version it would have been way better. The characters were much better cast in the 1984 version and the overall feel and vibe was better. I'm a total Dune freak.

The 1984 one is pretty damn good, but the scope of Dune is so vast its pretty much impossible to capture properly in a single movie. He did a damn good job of giving it a shot. Lynch's vision for the Fremen especially was way better. The SciFi version overall was great but the Fremen looked like a bunch of gay fashion models. Not that there's anything wrong with looking like a gay fashion model, but gay fashion model =/= badass desert nomad warrior.

Members scolfax
Descent II is absolutely fantastic. I'll add The Descent (1st one), The Ruins, and Drag Me To Hell.
Members Eschatologist
I like a lot of the suggestions in this thread, particularly Aliens, Event Horizon, Dune, etc. I like In The Mouth of Madness, for all the awesome Lovecraft references. The Mist as well, as it combines Stephen King's storytelling with a Lovecraftian aesthetic
