He was always experimenting with his body and at the time biochemists in Asia had isolated testosterone. To be fair at the time people didn't know it had adverse health effects...it was looked at as a vitamin. This was about the same time Russian female swimers were showing up at the Olympics with beards and voices like Bowser from Sha Na Na.
