They have the wound 3rd. My LTD has huge frets, so I don't find bending hard at all, and the wound 3rd works REALLY well for chords. The intonation just seems better. Members ENdtime Posted December 28, 2012 Members Share Posted December 28, 2012 Wound third does intonate better. Typically the 3rd string saddle sits fairly far back. When tuning down, sometimes it becomes almost impossible to properly intonate that string when it's unwound. A wound string actually has higher tension than an unwound one with the same gauge. So you actually will move the saddle forward. So toward the nut vs. moving it as far back as possible with the unwound. So in most cases it will definitely sound better and more in tune.. I find .019 is as big as I go with the unwound before the intonation becomes a little too "less than perfect". Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
