speakers for 2x8's

I am thinking about turning two sturdy little bookshelf cabinets into two 2x8's instead of buying a new cab. The idea being that the 8" is punchy as hell and will sing wonders with a clean, bright, chimey tapping tone. What do you think? Plus, I already have all the tolex left over from another job.

So... most importantly--where can I find 8" guitar speakers? I have found a few options on usspeakers.com. but difficult to judge quality. Anyone know about the Jensen MOD8-20?

Don't know about the 8-20 but I like the MOD 10-50. Sounds like a cross between an american & a british speaker. I also have a pair of Grundig 8" speakers rated 25w @ 8 ohms. I'm not using them. Great little speakers. If you want them PM me.

You didnt mention what you plan on driving them with. Really need to know the wattage of the head and impediance.

Parte Express has several high wattage PA drivers that may sound OK for guitar. Heres some that are 225W RMS with an SPL of 95.1 and FQ range up to 4k which make for a fairly loud output.

For a higher FQ range These. The SPL is a bit lower like a Jenson guitar speaker

For guitar The SPL is pretty low at 90 but the wattage is 200RMS

I never use 8" myself except for the one thats in my 15w marshall amp. I like 10" alot better, theres a much better selection out these.

Most of your better guitar speakers have a high end roll of 4~5k. Fender is more of a 4K rolloff and a Marshall 5K

SPL level is the key which tells you how loud the speaker will be. an SPL of 80 being HiFi stuff and 90+ your guitar and PA stuff. Wattage RMS tells you the power the speaker can handel cleanly. The wattages are additive so if you have 2X100 they should be able to handel 200w max. You want to use a total wattage of 30% higher than the amp can handel in most cases. If for example you have a 50w RMS head, then 75w RMS total speaker wattage should give you the best sound quality while remaining safe from coil damage. Going too high can have negative results. Speakers do have minimum wattages though some may not be posted. If you use like 400w on a 15w head, you barely create enough EMF to get the cones moving so the tonal qualities coming from cone dont sound very good or at best super dry and stiff.
