Members babablowfish
An endpin jack is wired to a pickup of some sort for you to plug into. A strap button is inert.
Members rjoxyz
what's the difference? I have always understood an endpin to be at the "end" of the lower bout of the guitar and a strap button to be mounted on the heel of the neck. Then endpin can be used in conjunction with a stap button or in the absence of a strap button, a tie around the headstock. When you plug into an amplified acoustic, it is usually into an endpin "jack" as Baba describes. The jack replaces the endpin, which can only be used to attach a strap. Members Capricorn
so an endpin and strap button is the same thing... it justall depends on whether it's situated at the heel or the bottom of the guitar?
Members jd-drafter
not exactly... a strap button can be installed in various locations and is held on with a screw... the end pin is only in the end of the lower bout and is usually an actual pin - think of a large bridge pin- inserted into a hole in the end block of the guitar... unless it's an 'endpin jack'- then it's still placed in a hole in the end block- but it will have some sort of nut inside to hold it in... and you need to drill out the end pin hole to allow most to fit... this may help visualize the difference... 8^) http://www.frets.com/FRETSpages/Musician/GenSetup/StrapButton/strapbutton1.html
Members Sangemon
so an endpin and strap button is the same thing... it justall depends on whether it's situated at the heel or the bottom of the guitar? No an endpin and a strap button serve the same function, but are two different things. They exist on opposite ends of the guitar. The endpin is located at the bottom of the lower bout of the guitar, a strap button is located on the heel at the end of the neck. Strap buttons are optional. If you do not have a strap button you will still have an endpin. The guitar is hung on the strap from the endpin, and either from the strap button or, if there is no strap button, the strap is tied around the headstock. If you do not have a strap button but want one, they are very easy to install. See this. The endpin is normally replaced with an endpin jack when a pickup is added to an acoustic guitar. The strap attaches to the end pin jack, and then the cable to the amp is plugged into it.

Members boxorox
Just to make things more confusing, on electrics and some cheap acoustics where the maker doesn't want to go to the trouble of accuratly drilling a bevelled hole for the end-pin, they use a (sometimes oversized) strap button. Bwah-ha-ha!
Members totamus
An end pin is a tapered pin that is held in by friction in a tapered hole in bottom of the guitar. A strap button is screwed in. An endpin can come out and cause your guitar to fall.
