Members offramp
...anyone done one? If so, how did it work for you? Sound?
Members jonmatifa
have you checked the tape op forums? I remember there being a big long thread on it.
Members offramp
No. It was my first thought, but then I thought it might be a little too close to the source, y'know? There tends to be--natch--very deep discussions, full of theory and detail, all info garnered from no-two-recording-setups-being-alike-yet-everyone-compares-data-as empirical. I'm just more interested in the street-level results; 'Hey, I did it and it did wonders for my sound!' or 'I did it, and I wish I hadn't because ____'. That sort of thing. Members Not Serial
what is the mod? trashing the presence peak?
Members offramp
Yeah. Desoldering the head, boiling the body 'til the goo holding the trafo softens, pulling out the trafo, resoldering everything. I keep hearing things along the lines of "sounds like an SM7", and "way less noise".
Members Not Serial
trafo = transformer? how could that work? keep in mind i am somewhat unfamiliar with the innerworkings of a 57 due to my tendency to hate the way they sound. i thought the transformer was there to provide the balanced i/o? Members offramp
The trafo exists to provide the midrange point that you hate so much.
Members Not Serial
ok, i read about how to do it. apparently the capsule itself puts out a balanced signal, and you tap off of that. however after reading, i beleive this mod cannot be used with phantom power. the 48V would go straight to the capsule (?) Members joshcamp
I have done this simple mod. I think it is an improvement. I never really liked the 57 stock - always sounded not right to me. now it sounds more 'real' -ie, more like what you hear in the room. i use it now on acoustic guitars - sounds very nice! I recommend this only if you have a 57 already and hate it. do this mod and you may like it (probably love it).
Members jonmatifa
People have made mods with this as well, where they save the transformer and put it in line on a small 6" xlr cable, so you can easily plug the transformer back inline when you want it EDIT-- I found the thread, took some digging around http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopic.php?t=32897
Members UstadKhanAli
The latest TapeOp (#54?) has several letters about this in their Letters Section in the front, with two letters mentioning that there are only two wires, not three, as the article had suggested, as well as several other comments.
