Members Ebsy
So a couple of days ago I decided to try out a set of flatwounds on my casino (Pyramid Gold 11's) and quickly discovered they'd take some getting used to. Today, I picked it up and just began to fingerpick a C chord unplugged. Straight away the overall timbre hit me. It was the opening chord to the strawberry fields demo (Anthology 2). I'm pretty sure this is the case anyway. The dates match up, the demo was recorded in November 66 and by this time all the beatles had thier Casino's (bar Ringo ) also surely flatwounds were the only string 'type' available back then?. I've seen a few people ask how a Casino sounds unplugged, in future I'll direct them to the Beatles Anthology 2 (Disc 2 - Track 1.)

Members One-armed Alec
I am interested. A friend of mine has a Rickenbacker 12-string. It came supplied with Rickenbacker roundwounds. Only when he changed the strings to Pyramid flats did the guitar really start to sound proper Beatlesy. Have you read "Beatles Gear"? Great source for this kind of info, BTW. Members 555
You could get flatwounds as well as round wounds (known as regular) then. You could also get light gauge, or heavy. Light gauge was .12 for the 1st string. Only wound 3rd strings were available. Next time you hear a solo from the mid sixties or ealier, and think you could kick that players butt, pick up an acoustic and try to play it. Members Ebsy
555 thanks! I never knew about roundwounds being available in the 60's. Also, I have to admit that I really couldn't get used to that wound G I could only get a maximum bend of a semi-tone on that thing so I quickly swapped it out with an unwound from a 10 set. The lightest guage available in the 60's being .12's is crazy. I know Lennon used flatwound .13's on his Rickenbacker 325, but due to the short scale they probably felt more like 10's....not that he did much lead work with it anyway

I'm always on the lookout for pics of the Beatles with their Casino's. Interestingly enough, I know the filename of that picture confirms it, but it's Paul's Casino lennon is playing there. There's no 'black washer' around the selector switch (only lennons had this ) Also the obvious Bigsby and the black knobs. George's also had a Bigsby but his had Gold reflector knobs. Here's some more pics... ' alt='>'> Any more?
Members Ebsy
Here's another weird thing I've just noticed. Paul's Casino had no Epiphone logo on the truss rod cover, while both George's and John's did....Now that's weird.
Members fuzzy4dice
The headstock is the dead give-a-way on Paul's Casino. He got his earlier than John and George, and at the time, Gibson was still using a "open-book" style headstock on the Casino.

I've currently got a Korean Casino in red, and I really love it a lot. Build quality is excellent. I'm sure the Elitist is better, but 50% price increase better? If I got an Elitist Casino, it would be used. Now, the Lennon one. Whoo! I love it, and I think the nitro would feel awesome on it, but it's PRICY! Maybe this was after the split with the beatles. Just my 2 cents.

Anyway, It was a tobacco burst originally.
Members unpluggedthumb
Ebsy! I LOVE your psychedelic Lennon avatar. Very Cool Indeed! So you have a Casino, is it a 500ish dollar one, or an elite, or a Lennon sig? I'm tempted to get me one of the 500 dollar range (Chinese?)ones, but the on at GC that I like, the natural finish one, the jack is out, actual it's in the body of the guitar. If you dig the Beatles, I have this Beatles Too a Tee DVD instructional guitar set and the dude plays all the Beatles tunes dead on, with a triple split screen using the model guitar played by each for that part of the song. Very cool even if you don't play but just love the Beatles.

Members U2M@
i know that lennon stripped the finish on his, but the lennon signature has a nitro finish on the necks, and on the body if you get the 1965 not the revolution

Members Ebsy
WOW! Massive thanks to jeffcoop and Rick 381 for those Casino pics, apart from the rooftop pics I hadn't seen the others at all. unpluggedthumb: thanks, glad you like my avatar I have a 2005 Korean Casino and I absolutely love it, it's my number one. I wasn't too impressed with the stock pickups, they sounded quite muddy and weren't wax potted so any amount of gain was out of the question. I got in touch with Bareknuckle pickups about replacements and they said they have a vintage rewinding service. Basically they rewound my pickups by hand to 60's specs, swapped out the magnets for Alnico IV's and wax potted them. Cost me just under
