I currrently have stock pup in the neck which is fine, and a Vintage Broadcaster in the bridge on a 4-way selector, but the Broasdcaster still cuts through a little too shrill for my ear and I'm loooking for a fatter lead tone.

Can I coil tap the '59, and if so, do I need a 5-way selector?

I had a 72 Tele Custom that I installed a Little 59 in the bridge, with a coil split switch (push/pull). It's a great sounding bridge pickup and is definitely fatter and fuller sounding than a stock single coil. Which is exactly what I wanted for high gain leads. For that, the 59 really screams. As far as the tone of it when split, I found it too thin and bright for my taste and I rarely ever used it in single coil mode - but other players might like it.
