Members Brittanylips
Well, this is the logical post-DAT replacement for my aging DA-P1: HD-P2 Tascam has apparently come out with its own DA-P1 replacement that uses flash memory. It's the perfect portable 2-track, as was my DA-P1 in its heyday. thank you, tascam. -Peace, Love, and Brittanylips
Members spokenward
cool. apparently you have to go to Germany to get a little more info from Tascam these days. pdf. - ja mit firewire! hey
Members Brittanylips
Bless you! I was looking for more info. I'd like to see some specs, know how much it costs, and when it will be available, but I'm really sold on it. Thanks. -PL&B
Members spokenward
The SMPTE and W/C will take it into film and video markets so I would expect pricing to be towards the higher end of the scale. These guys have something along the same lines: http://www.d-mpro.com/users/folder.asp?FolderID=3507
Phil O'Keefe
Yup, XLR's, Firewire, SMPTE, W/C, 24 bit / 192 kHz... it looks very nice, but as spokenward said, it looks geared more towards the film market, and I'd expect it to be at least triple the M-Audio and Roland product price points. I wanna hear more about that bad boy.

The timecode non-option does suggest a "film premium " for the HD-P2, but since it is so clearly the successor to the DA-P1, I'm hoping the price will be similar as well. The issue of MicroTrak vs. HD-P2 is arguably apples and oranges, and perhaps they would compliment each other - the HD-P2 for "serious" recording, the MicroTrak for quick and dirty. The only thing is that if the MicroTrak is simply too compromised a design, it might never be useful for me, even as a sketchpad, in which case I'd splurge for the Tascam apple over the M-audio orange. -Peace, Love, and Brittanylips

That seems reasonable. I'd still like to try that M-Audio unit out though and make my decisions on it based on first hand experience. Hopefully Gus will be able to arrange a loaner for me to review. Members Philter
Seriously nice stuff. I can see that being 16 tracks in a couple of years, with a breakout box.

Members Dylan Walters
Paging Gus..... Can you hook Phil up with this lovely device for testing? If Phil's too busy then I'd be happy to 'evulate' this as well .

Phil O'Keefe
Well, I would say you're certainly qualified to do so Valky! BTW, one of my biggest regrets about having to miss AES this year was missing the opportunity to walk the show with you. Did you have a good time? See anything interesting? Members spokenward
According to one online vendor this has a December ship date and a price near 1K. Maybe the Sweetwater folks and the rest of the world have more info.
Members Brittanylips
$1000 is a GREAT price, and substantially lower than the DA-P1 it replaces. -PL&B
Members John Sayers
cool unit - it doesn't say how long it records for - i.e how much memory it has. anyone know??
Members spokenward
The media is compact flash. I don't know if the unit has a ceiling limit on the media size. They suggest "Approximately 5.5 hours of operating time on battery power". You can bet that this is playback time. With phantom powering --who knows? Members boseengineer
Some math reveils, that if you are actually using 24-bit, 192 kHz (which I certainly wouldn't), you get about 15 minutes of stereo audio on a 1 GB Flash Card. If you choose (a more reasonable) 48000 kHz, you get an hour at 24 Bit and 90 minutes at 16 bit. In any case, that battery would't be the limit. Unless much bigger cards are become commonplace, I don't see the 16-track version coming.
