Members strat6866
Actually, if you've seen him live he grabs the guitar by the handle and passes it to his guitar tech and grabs the next one - very practical and no theatrics - when you see it being done the first thing you think, that handle makes total Sense!! But shouldnt he have a handle on the bottom of the body for the tech to grab onto?
Members strat6866
No. The JEM came out first when Vai went to Ibanez to come up with his ultimate guitar based on his Charvel Green Meanie. That was the beginning of that body shape. Here's an ad from the late 80's Yikes! Look at that guitar. Nice boots though.
Members Brewski
The RG/JEM models are all based on Steve's Design. The guitar tech grabs the guitar from the neck as steve holds it by the handle - that way they never accidentally touch hands - Yuck!

Are you insinuating that Vai is a homophobe? Note the boots...... I still think a 2nd handle would look cool and add to the functionality.
Members strat6866
Now that i think about it, i would put a handle on the headstock too. To hold onto while tightening the tuning keys.

Members strat6866
Every time i see a JEM i cant help but think of some kid walking down the street on his way to a guitar lesson holding his guitar by the monkey grip, with no case.
Members RUExp?
Here's a pic of Vai's Charvel. At some point he shaved down the lower cutaway for better fret access. Looks like a different guitar though.

Members Promit
Hmm. That Charvel headstock looks identical to a Fender headstock. Did they license it or something?
Members clay sails
I think the handle is so Vai can wield his guitar like a spear if Malmsteen pulls out a shotgun during a guitar duel.
