Members blue2blue
I'm not sure but I think we've surpassed the Stalinist USSR at its peak for population under incarceration. In my state, the prison guards' union is by far the richest and most powerful union in the state. The supposed governor (some steroided up Hollywood jackass) said he was going up against them and promptly knuckled under. The guards' union promoted one of the most repressive and draconian 3 strikes laws in the US (you may recall the guy who was sentenced to 25 years plus for stealing a slice of pizza) -- which had the effect of ballooning the prison population, which meant the hooked-up construction industry got a lot more fat-paying, poorly overseen, easy-to-corrupt government work, and the guards' union saw some of the most extraordinary growth of any union in the US in the second half of the twentieth century. Throwing people in jail is very profitable for the people who buy the politicans in this state...
