Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted June 20, 2007 Moderators Share Posted June 20, 2007 I'm pretty set on trying a set of TV Js in my next build and would like to hear from anybody who's installed a set of TVJs of any sort, but especially Powertrons. Although Bryan, if you want to build me some twangy soundalikes with open pole tops and chrome surrounds I'm easily swayed;)
Members guitarcapo
There's a pair in this Agile. They sound great but not really like a Filtertron. "Brash" is a good word. Metallic and tight with a punchy sound. Snappy. Not a huge amount of sustain. They sound nice but I think TV Jones' Filtertron Classics are more versatile. I like the way old Filtertrons sound and TV Jones has fixed the problem with those 90's "excuse" Filtertrons. Hi Sensitivity Filtertrons are nice too. I'm glad I got these, but I have a TV Jones Filtertron equipped guitar that gets more use. Hilotrons are way underrated too.
Members DARKMETL/
Yeah, I would like to hear some opinions on the Powertrons as well. I want to put one in my Gretsch Electromatic, but $135 a piece is a bit scary.

Are the Classics OK for sustain? My instinct is to use a Classic or Powertron at the bridge and a HT1 at the neck in English EM1 mounts.
Members DARKMETL/
I was thinking about the GFS Overwound Nashville filtertron as a sub. Its cheap enough that if I dont dig it, I can always change it out, sell it or put it into another project.

I think I'll splash. This guitar should be worth it.

Members DARKMETL/
^^^^^^^I do feel the same but I also am in need of a amp to go with it which I am saving for and a $135 TVJ pickup doesnt help the cause at all if ya know what I mean. Members guitarcapo
I have GFS standard Nashville pickups and do feel that TV Jones are a little better. A bit more presence with them. Another thing about Powertrons: VERY sensitive to polepiece adjustments. My recommendation is not to have both polepieces corresponding to a given string at different heights. You get a kind of phase cancleation going pretty easy that way. Raise them both in unison when balancing string to string outputs.

Members Devinstation
Maybe look into the GFS Brooklyn styles for a cheaper TVJs alternative?
Members DARKMETL/
I see they offer a Pwertron Plus but I cant figure out what the "Plus" designates. Is the Powertron a somewhat higher output then? Any idea what it measures output wise in relation to say...a GFS Overwound Nashville?

The Plus is what is recommended for the bridge, think it's overwound
