Members metal-mod
Im a bit new to all the technical stuff, im buying an emg 81 and emg 60/85 and was just wondering which order to place them in? i think its 81 in the higher position but not quite sure. Any1 help? Cheers
Members Timmott
What guitar are you putting them in? I tend to like the 81/81 in both positions, but many like the 81/85 or even the 85/81 combo. The 81 is a tighter pickup and the 85 is fatter sounding, havent had much experience with the 60 but I hear it has great cleans.
Members metal-mod
Im putting them in an Epiphone Gothic Explorer, i love that guitar so i thought rather than buying a better guitar il just replace the standard and pretty average pickups
Members Timmott
Sounds like a good idea, those Goth Explorers are cool and EMG's would look sweet in it. You can try the 81/85 combo which alot of bands use. EMG's are quick connect so its easy to disconnect them and switch the pickups, that way you can try them in both positions and see which you like better. Members metal-mod
Thanks. Im looking for a metalica kinda thrash tone so thought these were the best combo
Members GAS Man
What I see the most in the 81 in the bridge and 85 in the neck. The 81 uses ceramic magnets and the 85 uses alnico, so the idea is to put the hotter pup in the bridge. But there's also a lot of 81/81 combos out there. I have that in an ESP, but so far I'm preferring the 85N/81B combo that came in my new Epi SG.
Members Timmott
Well Kirk uses the 81/81 combo while I think James uses the 81/60 combo. I'm not to sure about using the 60 in the neck though, I've heard that the 81 and 85 have a much better lead tone.
Members metal-mod
Yeah thats why im torn. I thought 81/85 for the thrash but the 60 would be good for songs like fade to black etc and generally lighter stuff

Members GilmourD
James Hetfield has the 81 in the bridge position and the 60 in the neck position of his Explorers (and other guitars, I believe). I'm 99% sure he doesn't use an 85 in any of his guitars.
