Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted January 28, 2008 Author Moderators Share Posted January 28, 2008 um................... huh?! Tony the bevels on an Epi are very flat n sharp, while those on the Gibson have slightly rounder edges and the bevel is a bit curvy
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted January 28, 2008 Author Moderators Share Posted January 28, 2008 speaking of, youll have some fun extending the board i think. will probably need a little shim under the new frets to get it nice and clean looking. I'll either leave the ebony full thickness or use Gretsch's approach or a gap under the last few frets....you ever see a Duo Jet or Powerjet? Members Ryan Trevisol
Wow . . . that seems like a lot of work for an epiphone. Why is it you couldn't build one? That seems like way less work.
Members ihavenofish
my first guitar was a Gibson SG - and I've played the Epi G400 - I don't agree with you. epi: gibson: basically, the epi is a "straight" 45 degree bevel wereas the gibson is variable, getting alot wider in the waist making the effective "side" very thin. the epi is assumably done the way it is because its easy to do with a router and template vs more complicated CNC or hand shaping. That seems like way less work. that particular epiphone - the vintage g400 - is unique, and worth the effort i think. the neck is one piece, the body 2, theres no veneer, and its "real" mahogany. in short, its nice
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted January 28, 2008 Author Moderators Share Posted January 28, 2008 I don't understand why you have to remove the fretboards. I don't "have" to, but I want an ebony board, and the SG with it's characteristic gap between fretboard and pickup is just asking for 24 frets, stainless ones at that;)

Not really much work, couple of days, but it's partly experimental, I may consider offering it as a service to Epi owners

I'm not a big fan of the ribbon mahogany; wish they would have just left it au natural instead of putting the veneer on so veneering the top can't hurt...but I love everything else about the guitar. Like it better than the SG Faded's I've tried.

Members RUExp?
If you can find one of the early ones with the moon inlays they came with ebony fingerboards.
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted January 29, 2008 Author Moderators Share Posted January 29, 2008 I voted the SG. Those bevels will only be highlighted by the introduction of the veneer. For the effort you're putting in you may as well add a Bigsby, but I am sure you made your choice for a reason. looking forward to the results Just don't like Biggies Axe, I likes wraprounds:love:

I have an Epi G-400, and that's one thing I really don't like about it. The bevel on the Gibson SG is much nicer to me.
Members rush340
What? The Epiphone? The older Gibson SG fadeds had moon inlays. I didn't know they came with ebony fretboards though? Edit: Found one on ebay. I kind of want one now, didn't know they had ebony fretboards.

Members ihavenofish
vintage or faded? Don't get the difference g400 vintage: body has no veneer on the top or back, the figure runs through. the neck is 1 piece, no scarf or heel block. the fretboard is bound. the faded, which i cant find a good picture of right now, has veneer on the top, possibly the back as well, a 3 piece neck, and no fretboard binding. its basically the same as the standard g400, just matte. the "vintage" was a special model, much more in line with epi elitest specs than the regular g400's. they discontinued it mid last year, but many stores still have old stock. Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted January 30, 2008 Author Moderators Share Posted January 30, 2008 I have high hopes of winning this early 90s Korean Epi from Unsung that has a satin finish and good Gibson style curves
