Members piper19
Hello guys, I'm setting up my new tele, according to the Fender.com support site. It states however that the pickups should be around 2mm from the strings. This looks pretty close to me, in fact the string touches the neck pickup. The bridge also seems louder to me than the neck this way. What are the best pickup distances according to you guys? this is what I found on the site:"Depress all the strings at the last fret. Measure the distance from the bottom of the first and sixth strings to the top of the pole piece. A good rule of thumb is that the distance should be greatest at the sixth-string neck pickup position, and closest at the first-string bridge pickup position. Follow the measurement guidelines in the chart below as starting points. The distance will vary according to the amount of magnetic pull from the pickup. Bass Side Treble Side Vintage style 6/64" (2.4 mm) 5/64" (2 mm)
Members PuppyKicker
I never go buy what they suggest. Just adjust the height until it sounds the best to your ears.
Members solderjunkie
I keep my Tele neck pickup twice that far from the strings... it turns to mud otherwise. My neck pickup is about 4mm from the high E fretted at 22, 6mm from the low E fretted at 22. My bridge is closer to that quoted spec... about 3mm across both E's. Members songsforbears
On my '62 RI, I just put them as close to the strings as sonically possible. Sounded like heaven.

For me, it is usually a fair amount lower than company spec recommendations.
