Do you use Software that Wipes/Sanitizes Hard drives?

subjecting the mag media of heavy degaussing is also an option, but again, you want to overwrite first - I think current milspec actually requires such

No worries about the pro degaussers (IDK what the MILSPEC is, we just worry about HIPPA & ID protection compliance). The magnetic fields are very intense and focused on the drive, but it will screw up any media within 1 meter. The field oscillates for 15 seconds, and actually ruins the Zero track on HDs so it doesn't know where the sectors are anymore. Some of the programmable chips on drives also get killed (maybe from current induction) and drives may do nothing other than spin, and then flop around the seek mechanism.

Totally FUBAR. :thu: Expensive though each runs a couple thousand dollars. A friend of mine used a rifle on his HD - no way to recover that data - the platter was in a thousand pieces.

There are a few different software only solutions, for casual business and personal security a 7-10 pass overwrite pattern is fine.
