Members John_McEnroe
How long does it take for that white white binding on a les paul custom to fade to that nice yellowed look? Does it start right away? Or will I be waiting for 30 years?
Members Inspector 71
just get a regular les paul with that ugly ass orange cream binding. I think the lights at the factory are {censored}ed up. I love it when they pair it up with an actual white pickguard my biggest gripe with gibson besides the prices
Members John_McEnroe
Well I am thinking of getting a black les paul custom and its much cheaper to buy the new one with white binding rather than the VOS with the pre-aged binding. I also prefer the gold tuners to the greenish tulip style ones on the VOS.
Members guitarcapo
if you rub some brown Kiwi shoe polish on the binding and wipe it off it will get a little yellowing glow immediately. Johnson's paste wax does this too a little more slowly over time.
Members Wyatt
The binding doesn't discolor, the clear coat does. The clear coat over top of the binding will yellow over time, you can help with some UV exposure. Remember that for many years ('70's and early '80'), Customs had a Cream layer of binding outside of the normal multi-layer binding. So, a traditional true white binding isn't ever going to get the same tone.

Members cavpilot
It'll take a little more than just time to turn a Gibson into an LTD.

Members John_McEnroe
So did some of those gorgeous LP customs from the 70's / 80's originally have white binding? Or were they all originally cream? Are those old bindings kind of like nitro finishes in that they will age in a way in which new finishes/bindings will not? Members JohnnyR
So did some of those gorgeous LP customs from the 70's / 80's originally have white binding? The one in my post is a 76 that I have owned since 80 and when I got it the bindings were white. The nitro has yellowed over the years colouring both the bindings and the headstock inlays. The fretboard inlays are are still white MOP having no finish covering them. J.R.
Members John_McEnroe
Ok great thanks Johnny. As long as I know it will age like that over time I think I might pick up a new one. I know I would have it forever and it would be nice to see it age over time. Beautiful guitar btw.
