  1. It depends if you are looking at the Republic of Rome or the Roman Empire. In the Republic, the govt. was ruled by the Senate and 2 Co-Counsels who served 1 year terms. To be come Counsel, you had to hold lower offices and lead the military. Everything was base on personal ambition and family honor. The system was set up for ambitious men, but had checks and balances in case the man was too ambitious (ie: Julias Ceasar). If you have time I reccomend that you listen to the free podcast (itunes and audible.com) by Dan Carlin called Harcore History. There is a multi-part episode about the fall of the Roman Empire. I love this place...
  2. Construction of the Parthenon started in 447 BC and it is still there. It was more an illustration of my ignorance in a foreign country. I knew there were earlier projects that are still around, I was just amazed that these 2 old ladies were from Wallsend, England and it was just a matter of fact that that is where the wall ended. The Greeks have many great examples of architecture within Greece but not so much throughout the region, especially compared to the Roman Empire. The Greeks were thinkers and the Romans were doers.
  3. I thought your answer was a great start, Lee. It was general but it was also true. Sat at a bar in west London with 2 old ladies from Wallsend. I mentioned that that was a weird name for a town and they said, well, that is where the wall ends. Me being the stupid American ask "what wall?". I was lectured on history and yes, it is where the wall built by the Romans ended. Constructions started in 122 AD and it is still there. Romans were doers.

  5. Who would be stupid enough to link spam in a thread on page 8? Brilliant. Maybe if he was legit he would realize that this thread is not the busiest one here. Loser
  6. Reverb is very difficult to get rid of. Remember the mantra of recording...Garbage In, Garbage Out...you really can't fix it in the mix. Sometimes a good gate can reduce the duration of the verb but it will sound very processed.
  7. A second firewire drive is imperative. Recording tracks will go much much smoother if the disk doesn't have to keep causing interupts for system maintenance. The system and programs both are constantly reading and writing to disk. The external drive will only have to worry about the recording.
  8. What are you recording with/onto? Some info on the recording gear might help. And always remember "garbage in - gargage out" No matter what you have heard very few problems can be fixed in the mix. Record the sound you like and don't rely on EQ tweaks during playback to fix muddy recordings.
  9. Hey, I just made "member" status.....now I'm one over.....
  10. I'm sorry, but you have been fooling yourself. When everyone disagrees with you, the whole world isn't {censored}ed. It's usually you. Well stated.
  11. While I generally agree with this, this post seems to be a little extreme. If someone offered to help me with math and then told me that 2+2 = 5, I would just ignore him. But, if he then said that all other mathematicians are stupid, I would probably bash him too. I think the biggest problem people are having isn't his advice, but more for his disrepect for other mastering engineers. And quite possibly the fact that some young guns might actually listen and BELIEVE that 2+2=5. That's the part that scares me. There are new people here everyday that actually listen like we know what we are talking about I thought I was pretty decent at mastering until I let a friend of mine master something that we recorded. He is a pretty well known Hip Hop ME and I was humbled to the point that I don't even consider what I was doing should be called mastering. It is an art and a science. It takes a scientific artist to sit down and get truly "professional" results. The gear make a difference also. Plug ins are nice but they can't replace a rackmount Avalon.
