Moderators BATCAT Posted September 27, 2012 Moderators Share Posted September 27, 2012 *sigh* It's worse to mess up a song. I've used notes on the stage floor before for a brand new song. I try to work past that as soon as I can though.
Members jeff42
just use a note or cheat sheet or whatever. If its a killer song no one will care and most won't notice. IMO even if its not a killer song... meh just do it
Members guitarguy19
The stand is worse. Flub up a line or 2 of a song and few people will notice...and that flub will only affect those 10 seconds of the show. The stand up there is an eye sore from start to finish. If you're worried about more than a short jumble of a line or something...you're not ready to roll out the song.

Members Kramerguy
Option 3- It's worse to not practice enough personally, and either need the music stand *or* mess up the song. To me that is the largest and most problematic issue with bandmates- their simple laziness when it comes to doing their homework.

Members TIMKEYS
Would it be worse to use a music stand, or notes taped to the stage, or a kindle, or some way to help the memory.......OR take a chance on flubbin' a new song at a show? I think there are two levels of messin up a song. One is the classic trainwreck , and the other is singing the same verse twice or feeding in some words that were not written that doesnt trash the mojo of the song. One will flush and the other takes a high wire act and some fast talking to get it in the rear view mirror. What the crowd doesnt know wont hurt them. In the particular case that I'm asking about, I would not be singing but actually using notes for, uh, notes, or at least chords, song structure, etc. so I would actually be using a music stand for, music on songs that are pretty new to us, that we technically have down, but are still pretty new and subject to possible mishap, which I DON'T want... While I have used a discreetly side placed music stand for some gigs in the past, for this gig I plan to tape my notes on the stage...

Do what you need to do is my opinion. Some guys are having success with an Ipad. I music stand typically isnt going to make or break a gig typically. I uses index cards for chord charts these days. Playing keys I can lay one on the board. Lots of pros will have nashville notation on the stage.
Members GCDEF
Nice. You should clip a cell phone holster to the waist band and add black socks and white tennis shoes or sandals.
Moderators BATCAT Posted September 27, 2012 Moderators Share Posted September 27, 2012 Playing a song before you're really ready to play it? I don't think that's really a fair answer. There are plenty of circumstances where an individual musician might have to play a song live before they get the chance to fully commit it to memory and feel 100% "ready".
