Members walkerci
So here is my project and I would really appreciate any help from anyone in Brasil to source quality local gear. I am trying to build a good sounding, portable small PA system for my brother in law.It would be fantastic if some of the pieces could double as a bass guitar practice amp or gigging amp. Everything must by small enough to fit in a Fiat taxi trunk. I can bring some of the items with me on my next trip there, but ideally would like to locally source or ship as much as possible. Unfortunately shipping and customs duties to Brasil are incredibly oppressive. I'm thinking that speakers should be sourced locally. Not sure about power amps, eq, mixers, etc though. I've got a QSC RMS1450, Peavey EQ, and various other bits that I can donate to the cause. Any advice?
Members badhabit
Your post is kinda confusing. So, there are no places to buy sound gear in Brazil? Or, you want Brazilians who may be on here, to steer you to sound gear vendors in Brazil ? Governments with oppressive importing laws do so because they want their citizens to buy locally, within the country. I am confident that the manufacturers of small, compact systems have vendors in Brazil. I mean, if there's a market, Fender will find it. The Passport maybe ?http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?series=Passport%C2%AE§ion=fenderaudio Or two, QSC k-10s and a small mixer. You wouldn't even need a mixer if just playing a bass through one.

Members walkerci
OK, good questions. I've visited many music stores in Rio and the gear that I recognize (American made) is roughly 7-10 times the cost in the US. Let me put this in perspective. It is cheaper to fly to the US, buy a good amount of gear, and fly back than to buy it locally. I'm talking Musicman 5 HH basses for over $4,000 USD equivalent. Similar ratios for amps, cabs, etc.
Members badhabit
But then, aren't there heavy import taxes ? I could say the same thing about tequila and silver in Mexico; much less than here in the USA. But there's a limit on what I can bring back to the USA. I think some of our Aussie brothers complain about the same thing. Still, it doesn't answer exactly how we can help.

I would start there with the mains and subs. http://www.seleniumloudspeakers.net/ http://www.selenium.com.br/#/Segmentos

I've always wondered about their quality. What could you compare them to? Eminence? B&C?

Members rodclement
No Brasil eu sempre usei essa loja, os precos sao mais altos (claro) mas voce pode parcelar em varios pagamentos! In Brasil I used this company, prices are higher than USA (of course) but you can spread payments in your credit card! http://www.soulmusic.com.br/lojadesom/ The pros are that you get local service and warranty. Also try this, like a craigs list of sorts! http://lista.mercadolivre.com.br/audio-profissional-caixas/ I would buy and send all small stuff from here, like cables, microphones, anything you can fit in a small box and mail as a gift without causing suspicion but the big purchases I would do there. I favor Lesom microphones in Brasil, they are Shure copies and work pretty well for the money! Boa Sorte! Rod
Members Stingray5
I have the S1202 powered. Powerful speaker, but the Hi. freq. driver will rip your face off if you don't tame it a bit. I have had them for a couple of years with no problems. I was at that tent sale, if you look at the stage you will see those speakers used for monitors, that day. PS Tom G told me they were having thermal problems with them, but I never experianced that.
Members allexcosta
Ok, I'm from Brazil and to be honest I don't understand what you're looking for here... Brazil charges almost 100% in custom duties over foreign goods, so you won't find any stuff made in other country for the price you see online, not happening... That said, Mercado Livre has JBL's and RCF's all day long, take a look there. Brazil has many companies that make decent sound gear, not exactly cheap, but the quality is there... (Studio R builds some of the finest amps on earth) A hint, nobody in the US knows what a Fiat Taxi would look like. Jeesh, even me, Fiat makes dozens of different cars. Here some links, all high quality stuff, all made locally in Brazil: http://www.fzaudio.com.br/index.php http://www.studior.com.br/english/ http://www.attack.com.br/ http://www.staner.com/ Hope this helps

What could you compare them to? Eminence? B&C? I found the older D210Ti compression drivers to be very good for the money and I used them in many applications. They are very smooth in a small EV driver way. The newer version is the D220Ti They are at least as good if not better than Eminence, but are not B&Cs. (But neither is the price). I have used their higher Bl Factor subs to retrofit E-horns, like the CV B-36 and B-36A Jr Earthquakes and found them to be much better than the JE-189 woofer. I use four of these E-horns for outdoor use at Carshows and Rodeos, and all four fit in the Minivan. They keep my indoor subs in great shape and the woofers are inside the chambers and thus are less susceptable to rain.
