    I did a quite well-known demo of the an1x a while back:

    http://m.matrixsynth.com/2007/08/yamaha-an1x-demo-via-elmosexwhistle.html

What with the crazy sequencer, free-eg, mod matrix, sync, FM, multi-effects built in, etc etc, there's not much this baby can't do, on my demo there are things like harpsichords, melotrons, very FM timbres, things that are really more rompler/digital territory. Also, by using the sequencer to control bursts of noise at the same time as playing notes, you can add in snares to your bass patterns, creating a complete performance of bass and drums in left hand and lead/pad in the right. (no overdubs in the demo!) PS you can grab those patches i did on the An1x yahoo group

Mental synth, i really doubt the JP could do all that, it sounds lovely but it's a far more standard design than the near-modular madness of the AN1x. Nice keybed too on the An1x, very playable

This is my an1x by the way

What happened to your AN1x knobs?

i was gluing bright pink fluff to them so they'd be fluffy pink knobs, but the glue hadn't dried by the time i took the picture

yeah there's a little cute arpeggio in the chorus bit "stars they die" etc which is the an1x.

most of the sounds in that song are either effected guitar or prepared piano or industrially drums though

i'm taking a break for xmas and then i'm gonna start recording an album with the band!

the an1x will be getting lots of use, though i'm buying a few analogue pieces so i won't be relying on it quite so heavily!

So who won the match? was the winner based on specs? features? overall sound?

                I think it
Yamaha Motif XS7 / Roland JP-8000 / MicroKorg XL / Takamine GN30CE / Alesis iMultiMix 8 / Mackie TH15A Thumps / Epiphone Les Paul Studio Deluxe / Fender SuperChamp XD

Make sure you download the software editor for it. I don't think I still have the link but there's also a whole lot of banks you can download with it.

I've narrowed my VA choices down to these two. Been listening to lots of demos, and sound-wise, the AN1X sounds soooooo fat and juicy to me. The JP sounds good to me, but lacks the fat, the level of grit, of the AN1X. Just wanted to throw out a thread for any concurring or opposing opinions. Watching a YouTube demo of the AN1X right now, and it seems like the fat is just dripping out of the speakers. That said, I don't think you could design an uglier synth if you tried (IMO). Well, maybe the ION (again, IMO!). Let the cage match begin

EDIT: I should add that the JP does seem to beat the AN in the arena of hands-on panel control....

In 1998 I was shopping for a VA I could play with in my funk band. So I went to a music store and played a JP-8000 side by side with an AN1x.

Needless to say, despite having less knobs, I had WAY more fun playing the AN1x.

So I bought that, and never regretted it.

The JP-8000 is a one-trick pony: It's great for that Super Saw and nothing else really. The AN1x can sound like a Prophet, a Minimoog, a CS-80, a DX7, an Oberheim, etc. The only flaw with it is its weak plastic casing...once I chipped a key while it was inside a keyboard case.

Back when these two first came out I was really trying to decide which one to buy. I loved the layout and knobs on the JP but I felt their was something missing sound wise. At the same store was the 1'st incarnation
of the Access Virus so I played with it. Then my focus shifted to trying to come up with the cash for the Virus. I ended up spending money on recording gear. Then A friend of mine bought an AN1x so I borrowed it and
eventually ended up buying it from him. Impressions: Great sounding and capable of many timbres and quite a few user patches on the internet. The Editor is a must as it is so tedious to program straight from the board.
I wonder if the editor works with Win7 or OSX as that was a long time ago

Not agreeing with that. Supersaw is the only wave I have never used on it. It does plenty of other stuff. Seconds after plugging it in, I was doing exact versions of Steve Miller band synth intros, and plenty of other great, basic bread and butter synth sounds. The supersaw is okay I guess, just nothing I ever need.
I'm selling my Andromeda because the JP8000 does so well in the analog arena. ....for me

LOL, selling such an analog beauty that is Andromeda because of digital aliasing bastard that is JP-8000. I'm speechless.

Never played the AN1X, but Ive had a JP8000 since 1998 & it was, is & remains a very powerful & versatile synth. The Supersaw waveform is is not very interesting to me.
I love the noise waveform tuned, it can produce some of the most etherial sounds Ive heard on any synth.
The RPS sequencer ( realtime phrase synrthesizer ) is great fun for grooves , especially when controlling other synths.. especially beats.
