  • Looks like the Tide is going out

Not just because of the lunar cycle...the Tidal streaming service lost $28 million in 2015. The company lost "only" $10.8 million in 2014, but given that Tidal wasn't launched until the end of October in 2014, they went through a large amount of money in a short period of time (assuming their fiscal year aligns with the calendar year, which may not be the case). So...was the loss due to new subscriber acquisition costs that increased revenue? No, revenue increased by only 30% in 2015, nowhere near enough to offset losses.

What this says to me is 1) there are too many streaming services already, 2) people really don't care about lossless compression, and 3) how you roll out a company has a tail that extends long past the introduction.

Meanwhile, Spotify just hit 40 million paying subscribers... compare that to Apple's 17 million. And that's not to mention the 85 million who are signed up for Spotify's unpaid / ad-supported tier.

Possibly the worst recent news for Tidal is that Apple has no interest in buying them out.
