Members Billster
Cartel to record an album in a plastic bubble on Hudson River Pier 54. Sponsored by a soda company - bubbly pop? Tied into an MTV "reality" series too, of course. Is David Blaine in the band?
Members blue2blue
WARNING: That link goes to an audio-auto-play site... I think it's time for a law against auto-play audio on the web... Can we convene an international treaty commission on that?
Members the stranger
Maybe that's a good idea for a Firefox plug-in.

I think it's time for a law against auto-play audio on the web... Can we convene an international treaty commission on that? OK, sorry. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. I'll take auto-play audio over annoying flash sites. I leave my speakers turned off until I want to listen to something. I can't very well turn off the monitor. Can we convene an international treaty commission on that? Thanks for the warning. My absolute number one pet hate. Why do people think audio auto-play is a good thing? Members Cry Logic
OK, sorry. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. I'll take auto-play audio over annoying flash sites. If you use Firefox there's a neat extension called Adblock which can block any annoying Flash movies, as well as ads of any kind.... Another FF extension, NoScript, will block any & all Flash movies... NoScript is an absolutely invaluable for stopping a lot of other nasty stuff as well. Members brewgoodbeer
Interesting promotion. What happens when it rains really hard. It is not like that does happen in NY. I guess no recording that day.....and no sleep that night. Or is this more like a floating house aka boat house. I am invisioning this clear plastic floating bubble. Should have a nice slapback echo. Members Cry Logic
But some entire sites are flash based. Yes.It's a huge presumption on the site authors part that people wouldwant to look at a Site that's entirely Flash based. One reason people do it is it makes it very hard to copy or steal content form the site. You can't right click and copy from a Flash movie. I have NoScript installed and those sites just come up empty. It's then up to me whether I want to enable the scripting for thatsite in order to see it. I might temporarily allow Scripting for that siteand have a quick look.If it's really good I'll allow it permanently....otherwise, I'll disable the scripting and it becomes a site that I never go to. Any sites that have a script that checks to see if you have Flash installedare caught out by NoScript as well...even if they are mainly HTML and onlyhave a Flash movie or 2 on them. They will move the user to an interim page that will have a message, usually telling the user that they don't have Flash installed (another incredible assumption on the page authors part) Again I often have to enable the scripting temporarily in order to go forward, though I have noticed recently, some sites will give you a link to click if you are sure you have Flash and want to see the actual site. So some authors are aware of the problem. Another Extension I use is Adblock Plus, (not to be confused with the original Adblock, which has not been developed for some time)Adblock Plus enables the user to disable Flash movies and ads of all kinds, animated gifs, even text based ads, on an individual basis at the users discretion. I used to be a Flash freak and actually got to know the Flash authoringprogram quite well up to version 4.Around that time I had an epiphany where I realised Flash was mainly beingused for Web ads and my interest waned after that.it's a pity 'cause Flash is an amazing tool and to see it used mainly for banalweb advertising is very sad. I also use another FireFox extension called CustomizeGoogle which, amongst other things, blocks all the ads on Google search pages. It also blocks click tracking on Google search pages as well. It's also amazing how many web sites have multiple scripts running whichsend info to Google , Double Click and many other click tracking companies.Google recently bought Double Click which just increased their ability to track peoples' web surfing activities.NoScript catches all these scripts and simply stops them from tracking.I take it one step further, whenever I come across such a script I alwaysmark it as untrusted, which means it will automatically be blocked if I come across it on another web page. One further extension I also use is RefControl, which allows the user to hidethe referrer page from the current site. I also go one step further again and use the "hosts" file, which is a windowssystem file to completely block addresses of known ad servers. The "hosts' file is also used by SpyBot Search and Destroy to block sites that may contain malware or spyware scripts and other nasties. So I just manually edit the hosts file to include the address of any site Iwish to block for whatever reason. I know it seems obsessive to some people and it definitely adds a bit more effort to surfing the web but I absolutely despise obtrusive ads and clicktracking. If any of the above activities stop a web page from working, or being viewed correctly, but I deem the blocking necessary, then I simply write that site offregardless... end of story. I won't be party to obtrusive behavior on a web site or any site or company on the web that tries to track me.
