Members matt the rat
Anyone know of a decent software synth that doesn't require a MIDI controller? I'm not looking for anything special, just something for windows thats comparable to Garageband on Macs, in the sense that you can control the synth with just your computers keyboard. Members deanmass
A used Mac Mini using OPen VPN from your PC. A used eMac might suffice as well...Both can be had for $300 ish or less.
Members Magpel
You can control any VST softsynth with a qwerty VST app. Some allow variable velocity with the up and down arrows. Check KVR-vst.com and search for them. I forget the names off the top of my head. Also, if you are a "data input" kind of guy, consider controlling soft synths with the many available elebaorate step sequencers and arpegiator programs. Even though that is not my thing, I am positively enamored with the very affordable program ERA http://sonicbytes.com/era/era.htm It is a boatload of fun and very powerful, though ther manual is a bit opaque and the interface driven by some not-so-obvious icons. The opacity just adds to the mystery. Seriously though, I highly recommend this program

Members amplayer
Most of the Native Instruments synths allow computer keyboard playing. Also, as mentioned, Live has that function built in, and so does Logic.
Members Cry Logic
"...something for windows thats comparable to Garageband on Macs..."FL STUDIO With it you can play any builtin or 3rd party soft synth via the qwerty keyboard . Take note though that a Qwerty keyboard is not touch sensitive... so all notes will be recorded withthe same velocity.
