Members sunburstbasser
The flutes NOW don't have much wood content, at least not the ones used in wind ensembles and orchestras. I believe they come from a wooden reedless instrument design or somesuch.

Classical era flutes were made of wood, and they still make the same kind for Irish music and for playing classical peices as they would have sounded originally. Also, Chris Abell makes modern bohem flutes in wood (Bohem= the kind they use in orchestras). Wooden flutes are especially used for solos and small ensembles where their sweet delicate tone can be appreciated. They are generally not loud enough for work with large groups, as the air colum is not as stable as it is in flutes made from more rigid materials. I believe James Galway plays an Abell wooden flute from time to time, though I'm not certian. I know he used the wooden Irish Whistle made by Chris on the third Lord of the Rings film...
