what trade organizations are there in the music industry. obviously there's the musicians union and collectives like ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. but that's just the creative side and probably not the half of it.

but what about the actual instrument makers? what's out there as far as retailer, supplier, and distributor organizations. what makes this industry really tick? it can't just be random articles in Music Trades and 2 NAMM shows a year. seems like there'd be other things going on.

ok, that's kinda what i'm interested in. like when you say "luthier societies" it sounds all cloak and dagger, even though i know its not. what are these organizations? how do you get in touch with them?

Some others are:

AES - Audio Engineering Society. The AES is a professional society that leans toward the development of technical standards and advancements in audio technology in both music and broadcast engineering. The AES is represented by sections (chapters) and is an international organization.

NARAS - National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. NARAS presents the Grammy awards. There are 12 regional chapters. NARAS is an advocacy organization that supports the music community and charities like Musicares.

that's cool.

there's so much information and so many different things out there. but i think most people don't know where to look. the main songwriter in my group doesn't even know anything about getting his songs copywritten and belonging to ASCAP. i think its indicative of a lot of people. they start doing something because they love it, and don't necessarily pay attention to how they can further themselves.
