Website Design

It isn't terribly difficult to design a website yourself, with a little patience.

If you're looking to put up a promotional music site, you'll also need to consider maintenance in the overall cost.

For example, if you're a gigging musician, you'll want to announce upcoming gigs and other news on your site. Each time you need your calendar updated, you'll have to hire a web guru.

I have designed a personal web site, a web site for my music and a commercial web site for a local company.

If you do choose to hire someone, make sure you know what to expect. A band website will probably run well under 10 pages and should be short and concise. It shouldn't take a designer more than a couple of days to throw it all together.

Try to settle on a flat fee. Don't get sucked into an hourly rate for such a short project.

In addition to the web design, you'll need to pay for 1. a domain name 2. a web host. Depending on your needs, it shouldn't cost much.

Good luck.

You can do it yourself.

I do small business sites.

A simple band site I would build for around $500 including 1 yr hosting and 2 yr domain reg.

Not a request for business because I don't have a good band site for you to look at. Mine is terrible. You know about shoemakers kids being barefoot and plumbers sinks leaking. :)

I build small business sites 5-8 pages with no Java for around $500 examples.

www.vanswoodshop.com = $700

www.floridaforestproducts.com = $700

www.dongreenmelon.com = $500

You should be able to find a designer in that price range. But be carefull the FL Forest Products site was quoted $12,000 for a site before they came to me.

Dont do it yourself. people with no experience in web design make web sites that look like they didnt have any experience. Youll benefit MUCH more from having a website that was done by somone who knows what theyre doing. A website can be a major marketing tool, but not if it looks like crap. Shop around.

Flash Animation is even harder to do. Youll definatley want somone with experience making your flash, if your gonna have any.

I have to disagree. Most of those sites, especially the ones posted in this thread, are pretty bad, and almost all of them, even the ones someone was charing $700 for, looked "DIY". I'm no expert, but I've spent the last 3 years studying graphic design, and those aren't exactly works of art or anything. If you have a good eye for graphics, by all means make your own site. It's not that hard to do, just get someone to check over your coding.

As far as flash goes, well, you don't need flash. In-fact, often times, websites with flash are pretty bad, because it looks like flash. If your a design group looking to flex your muscles, sure, but for a musician, it's not a necessarily.

The best advice I can give is if your good with graphics, make your own page, just don't over do it and don't be fancy (that's the first sign of an amateur). If your not, hire a design student. We're cheap work! Also, we need portfolio pieces, so we will work hard on it.

It's not too hard to learn, just takes a little time...

Agreed! Also, very nice site. People making their own sites have to remember, it's not about how fancy your images are, hell, you can have NO images at all and still have a nice site if your designs and color schemes are properly done, and your information is well organized.

Your site has just enough color and images to have some eye candy, but its easy to read, and its well organized. There are a few pages that are iffy ("The Band" page mostly) that you have what i guess are HTML errors, but all in all, real sharp.

I agree about the images...I hate sites that have flash, or so many graphics that you can't find the info and they take a really long time to load...

I think that ease of navigation is the most important part of any site...a few nice graphics help make it look a little more professional though...

Thanks for pointing out some mistakes (i just put this site up last week, so there are still some bugs)....
