Members flat earth
Just read on the home page that they are no longer actively updating the pages. Been going for 10 years. I dont know how long that message has been there, but im sure it was showing latest forum posts recently. I think its a real shame, along with HC & Synthmania, its the place i visit most. Members Yoozer
Well, that opens up possibilities (or well, at least a good reason) for a new site that has more updates . It's too bad they aren't that fond of user contributions; reviews are all written by a single person instead of relying on other people's material. It is however a choice we'll have to respect. Members Yoozer
I'd love to put something like it on the regular Wikipedia (biggest audience, no worries about resources, and it could become a project with real standards), but I'm afraid that especially for the newer models people are going to complain about how "notable" these things are. There needs to be a "standard" box for the information (polyphony, arpeggiator, synthesis type) and a set of links to and fro. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Synthesizers has promising material but it's obviously not enough . Members XorAxAx
I agree that Wikipedia is the best place, but I don't know the political factors involved with asserting standards over the people who've already written material there. How does that work?
Members packrat
My experience with wikipedia is that the people running it are... poorly aligned with any conceivable purpose you can think of. While dealing with a specific synth page, I had problems with them whining about it becoming a manfacturers catalogue and continually going back and linking every non-connective word. Both are irritating. It might almost be worth hacking a few pages together and seeing whether it flew though. Maybe they'd be less willing to cut it out if the pages were already all up. Pictures could be a sticking point though. B>
Members Umbra
that's sad, its one of the best sites:cry:
Members Don Solaris
Yeah wikipedia can be real pain in the ass. I've seen so many examples of covered adds (specially for games and software!). But when you try to put something, they suddenly they correct each word that mentions some information about a company.

Do you mean like this??? http://www.synthwiki.com/synthwiki/index.php?title=Main_Page http://www.synthwiki.com/synthwiki/index.php?title=Synthwiki_by_manufacturer Started by one of the Analogue Heaven mailing list guys.... Looks like some of the Wiki Spambots have gotten to it. It's a good start, but needs some user interaction to make it into what it could be... Members packrat
I'm not sure an open wiki is exactly what you're after. Certainly, something with a sandbox for new people to play in, and a registered set of people who could get at the whole thing. Assuming that the inevitable will happen, I just grabbed a quick mirror of vintagesynth.com. I'll look at touching that up to look nice sometime in the near future. Members donaldcrunk
uggh, i dunno guys. i feel pretty strongly that VSE's successor needs to be domained on it's own. i think the user submission idea is a fine fine idea. i wonder if it's possible to buy the site from what's his face? Members electrobaby
Wow, thats a true shame....I found VSE back in about 98 and have been going on there ever since....that and this forum were the only ones I visited....anyone know of any others?? how about electro music...that seems like a cool forum....maybe that will be my new home. sad but all thing must come to an end I guess. Members Yoozer
Um, everything points to it that the VSE forums are still going to be there, it's just that the information on the site won't be updated anymore (not that this has happened recently, so). Oh look, they're up again! edit: and down. and up. gawrsh.
Members XorAxAx
The forum being back up is nice, but eventually the community will need to replace the stagnant VSE pages. IWB (I'm With Busey) on the need for its own domain, after a bit of thought. Wikipedia is good for general knowledge, like what an average Joe Schmoe wants to know about synths. But there's a lot more technical information this community could contribute that would go beyond the scope of Wikipedia. Think patch libraries, photos, latest OS downloads, etc. Plus, being on its own domain would allow said site to use a more synthesist-centric UI rather than the standard Wikipedia-style page. Members Umbra
Now if someone can combine VSE with prepal then we would have a really decent resource.
