So, I just bought that S90ES today and.....

It's a nice piece indeed. Now I have my multi-timbral hardware sound source and a piano which will help my practicing and is nice to have around when working with others. Still, it doesn't have the whole sound set of the Motif's. They probably had to leave some out to make room for that main piano sound.

I also didn't want to have to bother with Studio Manager for editing sounds. I posted the problems here when I had the Motif Rack ES.

I think I exhaled when I placed it on the Z-Stand. :D

Going to have me a good breakfast and see if I can get cracking on a fresh remix.

I'n not sure but I think the Motif/S90 series got all new sounds but I'm pretty sure you could program the old voices with the S90/ES waveform set. It's pretty huge.

The Motif ES and S-90 ES have the same same waveform list. The S-90 ES just adds another piano sample group. Though they have different presets, the S-90 ES should theoretically be able to do any Motif ES sound. Possibly import Motif sysex patch data.(?)

Hopefully they have that info at motifator.com . I want some more of the Motif's dance oriented voices to fill out the user voice areas in the S90ES.

i'm pretty sure the s03, s30, s80 and cs6x all have a similar older/smaller soundset than the newer s90/90es.

i can use patches from the cs6x in my s80.

the keys on the s80 are IMO far better than on the similar lower priced models tho.

MuzikB, the ES can definitely do all of the S90 sounds. I had someone send me a couple banks of stuff that were patches unique to the S90 that were not on the ES (some for good reason). I was able to import them with Studio Manager and audition all the sounds, and saved those that I liked- mostly leads and some pad stuff. If you know someone with an S90 who can dump that sound to Studio Manager, you can use it.

I don't recall if the Lately patch was in the banks I got- I'll take a look and if it is, I'll let you know.

EDIT- I found it- PM me your email, I'll forward you the entire bank of 256 sounds.

Well, Studio Manager does it again. I see things have not gotten any better with this program and my computer since the Motif-Rack ES I had.

The voice editor will not receive bulk voice data. It gives me a Bulk Data Timeout Error. I have tried everything in their troubleshooting guide in the voice editor manual and none of it has worked.

Now here's the funny part, the Multi Editor works without a hitch and it has the same setup as the voice editor.

Yes, I tried new midi cables. No help.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

And if your wondering, yes it still emits that high pitched whine from my computer's processors when either of the editors are active within Studio Manager.

You try using a USB cable? That works great for me. Are you trying to load the entire bank or just one sound at a time to audition?

Both of the studio manager programs work great for me, I'm not sure what to say about why multi mode works and voice mode doesn't. Maybe try reloading it? They are all separate installers. Also if you use USB make sure you have the latest driver from Yamaha's site.

Dan88z, There's no midi driver present on the Yamahasynth.com S90ES support page.

Studio Manager does not show USB Midi as an option despite having an Apple G5 which is pretty loaded with USB ports.

My Sony Digital Camera was plug-in play for pete's sake.:(

doesn't that board have some kind of a card slot on it? my s80 has a smart media slot. if you've got a card reader on your computer, you can load banks onto the card for transfer into the board.

yamaha has a program for this called 'card filer'. it was on the cd that came with the board.

you can also get it by clicking on the red 'downloads' word under the pic on this site:

Nope. It is capable of supporting USB devices. I've been backing up my Multi-setups to a USB hard-drive. The S90ES doesn't come with any software. Just 3 books and one is in spanish or french.

Studio Manager works on my G4 laptop and a friends G4 tower. It's filled with bullet holes on my G5.

Does anyone know how to completely uninstall SM. I tried by using the finder but the Motif Rack ES stuff still shows up. Yamaha Tech support is going to get another ear full tomorrow.

It's still a great board. Software's crap. I'm too frustrated to be productive for today so I'm going to shoot lots in Quake 4 now.

do you have the latest OS - V. 1.03

and

multipart editor/voice editor - V.2.1.6?

they were uploaded by yamaha not too long ago and may have some bug fixes.

maybe better to go to a forum that might have more specific knowledge of the 90ES, but here's the link to the updates:

http://www.yamahasynth.com/news/index.html#07

it gives those OS's and also a little more than halfway down, it's got a new usb midi driver for mac osX uploaded on Mar 15, 2006.

if you've already tried all this stuff - i'm out of ideas.

Thanks Mildbill for all your help but it still doesn't work properly.

(S90ES OS 1.02) I downloaded the 1.03 OS but it states in the readme file that this update is for S90ES's with OS versions EARLIER than 1.02. So I didn't load it.

The latest editors were downloaded and are being used. 2.1.6 for the editors and 2.1.8 for Studio Manager.

The USB Driver download brought up the USB options in Studio Manager but I still get a "Bulk Data Timeout Error" when trying to do a bulk receive to Studio Manger. Transmittal in the voice editor works fine and again, both functions work fine in the Multi Editor. All this is through the USB connection.

Back to Quake 4..........

Muzikb, I use a USB drive to back up my stuff too- it's the only way to get the Master settings and Performance settings. I use studio manager only to audition/load/edit patches.

I didn't realize you were running a Mac. Maybe there is a bug in that version of the program.

You should be able to open that file I sent you, then copy the Lately patch to a new bank, save it, then copy the new bank to your USB drive, and then load the bank which will consist of 1 patch, to your ES.

Burster1- send me a PM w/ your email and I'll send it to you. Anyone else who wants it let me know as well. They are not new patches- just stuff that is on the S90 that was not included on the S90ES. A guy from sninety.com sent me the bank a while back.

I get the timeout on bulk download of User 1 and User 2, but I am able to do bulk download of each User bank separately.

I'm using Midi channel 1 for both in and out, btw. These are the default settings.

Although this is a pain, you can also transfer files into Voice Editor via saving voices to the USB output to something like a keyfob chip, and then importing this file over on the computer.

That's pretty much the setup here as well. I'm using a 20GB USB Firefly drive right now for backup and transfer.

I'm going to call Yamaha after I fix myself something to eat to give them as much detail as possible in order to fix this in the next update. It's either that or just do everything on the synth itself for me. Keep me from getting frustrated and staying focused.

I'm currently going back and forth with Yamaha Tech right now on this.

Do happen to also use a Korg K-Kontrol product?
