I had 2 ex5s for a long time. The rack is good, but the key version has more controllers (obviously) and a few more editing buttons than the ex5r. all in all its a great machine with class a sounds. If you have no room, grab the ex5r, if you have the room and would like a new controller with user assignable knobs(6), pitch wheel, 2 mod wheels, octave button, scene switches/morphing, AT, and a ribbon, grab the ex. Prepared to be addicted with either one.......

I've used mine live since they came out. Buggy (there's a FACTORY PRESET that calls up one of two ways every time I try it!), and the only practical way to use samples live is to have them in Flash ROM.

Still, a great-sounding board, and Yamaha's synth action has always been my favorite.

I bought an EX5R new when they came out. Very deep, detailed, "pro" sound (although the Motif, as a ROMPler, is superior). You probably already know about the multi-synthesis features of the EX-series. If you have the space in your rack (it is huge), it's definitely one of those "sleeper" synths that went forgotten (just like its predecessor, the W5/W7)

Go here to listen to some of my demos of the EX5R, I think you'll like the sound: http://www.synthmania.com/ex5r.htm

PS: A3000 series sampler included

Alesis Fusion is a lot like the EX5/r.

Different synth types in one board, but the Fusion has way more polyphony.

Both have AN and VL(PM) type modes, but the Fusion has FM, and the EX5/r has FDSP.

Both have supplied samples and sampling can be done with both.

Both have sequencer/arp.

Both had bugs/updates.

Neither sold all that well, and both were dropped relatively quickly.

I have both an EX5R (bought new for a steep price), and a Fusion 6HD.

The EX5's SCSI is slower than a 3-legged tortoise. I can't imagine trying to load in a large sample in a live setting - it's hardly faster than the floppy drive.

Loading sounds into the Fusion is like greased lightning in comparison - way faster than any other piece I've used.

I agree with what everyone else said. I've been using mine as my main live keyboard for 5 years. Factory presets are decent, but with SCSI and FlashRAM and the various sounds available from EX5Tech, the board goes from decent to stellar! I'm never getting rid of mine.

Have you guys ever loaded up the Analog Monster set of patches from EX5Tech?

Never mind powerpop - I just took a quick peek and see that you contributed some sounds too. I knew that name was familiar.

I haven't loaded them up for a while. Time to give the old EX5R another spin.

I bought EX5 silver eddition brand new in year 2000. It's still here and works perfectly (except 3 most used buttons, which will have to go to contact cleaning eventually, but still working using harder pressure).

I love that synth. Extremley versatile sounding. The sounds I enjoy the most are digitall pads:

Great DX7-like e-pianoes and similar "FM" sounds. Don't like pianoes.

I got a Yamaha EX7.

(61 keys version of the EX5, with Less polyphony, no VL sound engine, without the AN+FDSP engine function, and a few more functions...)//

I simply love is... Amazing sounds... especially good leads, pads and lots more... Lots of controllers etc'...

Disadvantages: It's extremely heavy, it's impossible to find the additional flash memory (very rare and expensive), and it might be hard to use for beginners, but it only takes a while to understand it...
