Members Suilebhain
With all the new little non-key synths coming out, has anyone encountered something that would essentially equate to Tim Blake in a box? I mean something with two or more knob or slider controlled LFOs and a couple of VCOs that allow for all the burblage that Blake produces on his VCS3. Anyone encounter something like this? Members Ed A.
Yes, this will do it: http://www.xils-lab.com/pages/XILS-3.html Audiomidi.com has a "No-Brainer" with a slightly scaled down version for $20. I'm pissed that I paid full price for the full version of XILS-3, then they come out with this $20 version that does 90% of the original.
Members Suilebhain
Pretty cool, but I was thinking along the lines of a real box, not a virtual one - something small that can be plugged into a bunch of delays.

Members greaseenvelope
My immediate thought would be to check out a used evolver. That way you have similar modulation and sequencing capacities to the VCS3 & two extra digital oscillators to use as weird FM sources or the like. But I will say I have seen a lot of people get rid of theirs, and it certainly won't sound as much like a VCS3 as putting together a little dedicated modular cabinet.. but those are a lot of work and addictive and quickly get bigger. I was the "Tim Blake"+"Robert Calvert" in a space rock band a while back and my Novation Kstation served admirably and has a pretty good sound for a VA (for this kind of stuff). Members Meatball Fulton
I really don't know why people dump their Evolvers, most complain about the encoders but to me that just makes it much easier to tweak! I use mine for exactly the sort of thing Suilebhain wants to do. It is more polite sounding than a VCS3 but what isn't? I'd also take a look at the MFB Kraftzwerg (no sequencer, though)...you can crossmod the LFOs (which go well into audio range) for much fun and the patching is icing on the cake. Members Suilebhain
I have an Evolver and love it (upgraded it twice now), but what I am hoping to find is something that triggers without a keyboard and has the ability to assign knobs for flexible manipulation of the rate and depth of the LFOs. Members Suilebhain
There are very few pointers throughout the history of electronic rock music that point to Tim Blake so it is fully understandable to not have heard of him. Once you have heard him, though, your third eye is fully open.

Members Iamthesky
Although I missed out on Tim Blake's Gong years, I was lucky enough to catch his tours when he first played with Hawkwind. Watching him do Lighthouse live was quite an eye opener, and definitely a major factor in my getting into synths. I'm still looking for what I call the perfect "bubble machine" sound, although I suspect I'm really going to need a modular or semi-modular.
