Members devonteran
I'm thinking about buying this:http://kansascity.craigslist.org/msg/1000781581.html epiphone explorer - broken neck and the owner doesn't have all the pieces but claims he can get them. Assuming the other pieces aren't available. For $50 is it worth getting this thing? I'd take it to a shop to get it fixed.

You can find an Epi Explorer that's in good condition for about or less than the price it'd cost you to get that fixed, not to mention the inconvenience. Members Belva
If the pieces are available, snag it & find another guitar to put the pieces in. I 2nd the Epi Explorer motion if you have the pieces.
Members WRGKMC
I've done alot of neck repairs. The link you put up fails so I cant judge the damage. If its broken at the head, it may or may not be repairable. If theres enough meat there to glue its not to terrible to epoxy it back. I've has a few where I drilled and put steel pins in it for strength. If the necks shatterd into several pieces then you have a different story. If pieces are missing you have to make new ones which can be a major task.
Members Alan Roberts
If you can't do the work yourself, don't buy it. Paying to have it fixed would probably cost more than the guitar would be worth.
Members Belva
I'm not so hot on repairs of this nature. Could be because I used to drink to excess & would break it again!
