Members joelbah
So my cover band, Steel Toe Stiletto, multi-tracked ourselves at a show and we want to use this as a live demo. We added a sample of some lobby noise because we didn't have a crowd mic and we wanted the room to sound a little more lively. Listen here: http://soundcloud.com/joelbah/steel-toe-stiletto-live-demo We are in the process of mixing it. We edited a couple of things, and overdubbed a couple of BGV parts that didn't come through to well in the recording, but we pretty much did one-takes so they would still sound like a live performance. Also the drums were sub-mixed when we recorded them so we can't tweak those a whole lot. Any input? We want it to sound live and raw, but also clear and balanced...you know? Members philbo
The mix is great, very well balanced. Nice, tight sounding group. You might want to get permission from the people who wrote/own the music before publishing a demo (or performing those tunes at gigs) to avoid legal complications down the road... The risk is proportional to the venues you gig at; if it's at out of the way tiny places, you might not have any problems.
Members joelbah
so are you telling me that every cover band needs to get permission to play other artist's music? I find that hard to believe.
Members Hush
I always thought I was up to the venue to get the rights or pay the fee?
Members philbo
Maybe so... But publishing someone elses music is another matter.
Members BushmasterM4
The venue has to have a license. If you are putting together a live cd of covers' and selling them, then you need to pay the royalty fees. Google "Harry Fox Agency" or just visit www.harryfox.com for all your legal questions.
