if you look below you can see my gear. currently i am using only the 14 and 16 inch toms. the 14 is on a snare stand. My question is pertaining to the terrible tone i get when using a snare stand versus a susp. mount. any suggestions how to get rid of the terrible tone.

The reason you're getting that tone is because the bottom head isn't resonating. By placing the tom on a suspended mount, it allows the bottom head to vibrate and the sound of the head to escape. By clamping it into the stand, you mute that sound.

1001gear's recommendation is the next best thing to NOT putting it in a snare stand. That's actually a pet peeve of mine...

Coincidentally, do we all realize that's what we do to snare drums by placing them in a snare stand? So much sound is being lost. What a shame. I need to get my hands on Tama's Air Ride system!

If you do feel the need to use a snare stand on your tom, don't just rest the tom in the basket, but actually clamp the tom inside the flange of the bottom hoop. This will still allow the head to resonate much more than just setting it in the basket

I hate using the mouting arm. Ive had my tom on a snare stand for a while now. I dont like using the mounting arm because when ever i would hit the bass drum alone, the tom would provide an over tone. For at least a year I thought my bass drum was crap, but once i put the tom on a snare stand, the over tone is gone. you just have to clamp it so its on the edges of the rim.
