I guess I'm 2 months behind then, because I haven't seen the Beyonce drummers on the cover yet...

But, good on ya Nick, congrats, and keep up the good work! :thu:

Awsome, I'm patiently waiting for that issue, I finished Januarys and Februarys (Nikki Glaspie and Kim Thompson on cover) already so I need a new one to dive into.

Congrats.

While we're on the subject of Modern Drummer...

What ever happened to that HUGE INTERACTIVE CD ARCHIVE that they put out a few years ago??

Does anybody have this?

Does anybody even remember what I'm talking about or was this a dream or some sort?

The issue I am in is the new one that has all the extra distribution at NAMM next week. So I am guessing it hits news stands soon after that. Give it a few weeks and you will get it.

I checked out Modern's website and I am guessing that it will be posted in the "news/events" section of the website, but not till then issue is out in stores.

It's only a little paragraph, here I'll just type it out and save you all the over price ;)

"Check out Nick Mason (Mad Yellow Sun/Voodoo Dollies) on ABC's new music show, Official Heat. The show offers the latest in entertainment news, reviews, concert footage, and behind-the-scenes exclusives. For more on Nick, visit his Web site, www.nickmason.org"

as a customer rep at a medium-run magazine printer i feel i'm qualified to comment on this!

first, it's common for a magazine to hit newsstands first, sometimes before the mailing portion of the print run has even been addressed and sent to the post office. it really depends on where the piece is printed and how it's done - as an example, if a magazine comes in a plastic sleeve (polybag) that's an additional process usually done only on the mail copies, and some places don't even address magazines on their stitchers. you have to compare how easy it is to take a magazine with a UPC code on the cover off a stitcher/binder and load it right onto a truck with how complex it is to process a mail list, inkjet or label the mail copies, and haul it to the post office (or, in the case of most large printers, have their postal annex take it away). in some instances, a publisher won't deposit the money into their postal account until some advance copies have gone out and they've been able to collect some of that issues ad revenue.

second, the post office is the most god-awful worst thing ever. i'm sure MD is a periodical, but in the case of standard mail there are places in the CONTINENTAL united states that are 6 or 7 business day delivery points. from LITTLE ROCK, which is pretty much central in the united states. we get constant complaints from our publishers about the post office. i have a client at a local college (30 minutes away) that didn't receive their annual report until 6 weeks after it was mailed. 6 weeks! at this point, i feel lucky when something arrives in my mailbox at all.

third, anytime there is a show going on (in this case i guess it's NAMM), the show copies are a HUGE rush and can go out long before even the newstand copies make it. everybody wants to have all the latest info for shows, so they all wait until the last minute to publish that month's magazine.

most of the reason magazines sell subscriptions is that increased BPA-reportable circulation (xxx paid subscribers, etc) means they can charge more for ads - this is why subscriptions are almost so much less than the newstand price. the tradeoff here is that in a lot of ways, the subscriber gets kind of shafted.

XCATHODEX,

Thanks for the inside scoop on the magazines, I have occasionally wondered about things like that and always thought (or at least hoped) that there was a reason for it. Good to know that there actually is a "method to the madness" and that although it would be that things such as this defy all logic and common sense---that there is some actual real-life reasons behind it!
