Members AllanGuy
Correct me if i'm wrong, but bottom drum heads are to help the sound be much louder, right? If thats the case, how come marching quads/tenors are able to be so loud without them? Also, how often if at all should I replace my bottom drum heads or front bass head? Members D Carroll
You are wrong, they are to shorten the sustain of the drum, and keep it in round. Most people here can tell you a new advantage of having them, but volume is not one of them...

Members qwertyMan
Bottom heads actually INCREASE the sustain of the drum. I've compared them before. They also generally set the pitch of the drum. Tightening or loosening the bottom head will have a vast effect on the pitch of the drum, when tightening the top head will not change the pitch as much as it effects the feel of the drum. Members kestrou
I agree with qwertyMan - having that bottom head keeps the sound resonating inside the shell, rather than just projecting that single stick hit out the bottom of an open shell. Must be why they call that bottom head a resonator, huh?! kestrou
