Gonna take me some lessons

I stopped in at Columbus Percussion this morning to speak with Jim about opening the store early to those of us attending the Drum Jam, that's all a go- he's into opening the store up to us.

So then we started talking electronics, and I've decided that I'm gonna take some lessons, both to get some correction on my mechanics I may very well need, brush up on my rudiments, and the main reason, learn to program elactronics.

It's 80.00 a month, half hour lessons. Hope it's worth it.

honestly, i've been thinking the same thing. but, it's hard to justify that when i don't really feel i've worked out all of my demons yet. i'm not bored yet, in fact i know what i have to work on. i prob should get myself into shape first, then i can get the most for my money.

nah, i'm just sayin' i don't want to start lessons sayin', "sure wish i could play faster. how come my hands are so sloppy, etc." i KNOW how to fix that {censored}. i just would like to get some of my skills down so i'm not wastin' time, ya know?

That's Jim Rupp's store right? He plays beautifully. I'd have him look at my technique.

Correct Well. He's a hell of a good guy too.

All jokes aside, my decision to take lessons doesn't have anything to do with the Drum Jam (cdawg) :-)

I've contemplated this for some time. I can hold my own, but I want to be a better player. I'm only in competition with myself. Now that I have one last half gig this Saturday w/ SOL, I can really start focusing on improving and learning, especially the electronic drums. I'm now setting with both an SPD-S, and a DTxtreme at the house. I intend on setting all my electronics up where I live in the basement, including a Yamaha keyboard. Then in the basement of my house, where my Mom lives, I'll set my acoustic kit up. When she's not around I can go play them.

I really am excited to learn to combine electronics and acoustics. I'm looking at saving up for BFD 2.0. With what I have and that software, I should be able to come up with some cool {censored}.

BTW- Jim's having me work with some stellar rock instructor he's sure is who I would work well with. Plus, at a half hour a lesson, I can catch it at my lunch hour. CPP is only about 20 minutes from my office.

It's kinda exciting to be freed up to focus on myself only for awhile.

Make sure to give him a realistic idea of your finances and available time too. About 10 years ago I drove in from out of town to take a few lessons from a guy (Mike?) at Skip's in Sac. Told him up front A: I have to drive a ways to get here and B: I'm broke as hell (and Marko, I'm not saying that you have the same logistical and financial challenges I did). He watched me play, did some sight reading tests etc. Within two lessons I had enough form tips, drills and material to keep me busy for a year. The drive was only about an 1:15 each way but I just couldn't afford {censored}e at the time.

Not ideal by any means because the teacher can't monitor your progress and correct things that need improvement or, more accurately with me, are going horribly wrong, but those two lessons sure helped me in the long run.

Thanks Bro. Good info to know, and makes good sense.

I'm in the Columbus area Monday/Friday, so logistically it's not a problem. And, this is truly teaching an old dog new tricks. $20.00 a half hour seems fair not knowing what teaching rates are today. A half hour isn't very much time it kinda seems, but then again, it may be information overload for me for all I know at this point. I haven't had anyone instructing me professionally on drums since I was in 8th grade.

My head may explode.

First of all, fill me in on this Drum Jam.

Second, I have been wanting to get lessons from there for a good long time, so let me know if they are good.
