  1. On the setting up a studio debate, I think it depends where you live, how diverse you are and what local's needs are. Personally I have been saving for an age to start a studio in my area, because I know for a fact (yep, ive done the research) that the only other studio within 30 miles is VERY expensive and will ONLY record metal. "It's all we specialize in mate!" Now, dont get me wrong, there's a fair few metal bands around here. But when this studio charges 200 quid (around 400 dollars) a song, NOT including mastering, it really takes the piss. To make things worse, I know of at least 5 bands (2 metal/rock, the other 3 very different) who would be willing to pay the rate that I charge instead of the expensive studio. I have a day job, and have explained to them that it would only be at weekends and evenings, which is cool for them too, as they all have day jobs. Yes, I've paid a lot of money for my gear, but at the end of the day, i'm having great fun in the evenings, great fun at the weekends, and word is getting around. Yes, the income may be crap from the studio alone, but at the end of the day if I am really enjoying the experience, meeting some great people, and putting out decent material, I don't see what the problem is. But yes, I can see the point people are making. The situation over the pond may be completely different, and there's a big difference if your doing it for a living. For what the kids doing, he's pretty good. As long as he progressively moves up, there's potential. But things arent going to get really good while he sits on his arse staying at the same rate. Having said that, if he's having fun, the so be it. Good luck to him, I say:thu:
