  1. Frets you will never be a normal poster as long as you are a moderator. You cannot take your hat on and off. People will not treat you the same as long as you are a moderator. You volunteered for the job so even if you don't get paid you still have the duties. I am not saying the duties have not been fulfilled. This is not an attack, but just a comment about your statement of taking on and off your moderator hat. The wait of the crown is heavy indeed..... I'm afraid, it still doesn't invalidate any of my comments. I stand behind them. And I don't believe that I acted inappropriately as well. I never challenged the character of the poster. I challenged his tone and and rendered my opinion on the issue.
  2. Sorry frets, your "pointed jab" of a personal attack was just that. And pretty undignified for a moderator to do. Next time you're in a restaurant and the waiter gets personal with you because they disagree with your choices, I'll wager that you find the manager pretty quickly and complain. We can disagree all we want but the personal stuff is uncalled for...particularly from a moderator. EG The pointed jab was mild. It was in response to the dismissive tone of your first two posts. You could easily have come back with a simple response similar to the last one you made here and we could have called it a day. I am not a waiter. I am a customer here. I pay the same dues you do and I get paid the same salary that you do. I never once put my mod hat on while I was in this thread. Also, I have nothing to hide. All of my posts remain up for people to see. I never challenged your character. I responded to the tone of your posts which you must not be that proud of seeing as you saw fit to pull them.
  3. I've compared BG Pure 90s to GFS mean 90s. The difference, both in terms of clarity and noise, is notable. The BG is a superior product. I made a simple statement that GFS pickups are not in the same league with a boutique pickup. You can argue that boutique pickups, Duesenbergs or any other boutique gear is overpriced. I'll agree with you. But there is a difference. Anyone who refuses to admit that is as much a fanboi as the one who refuses to touch anything that doesn't say custom shop on it. Myself? I don't pay boutique prices as I feel they are priced with vanity in mind but I'm honest enough to admit I can hear the difference. Sorry, but I don't see people lining up to give advice to people telling them to put GFS in their Fender custom shop guitars. EG On this we both agree.
  4. Adequations was a joke at the use of the word obfuscate by Frets. I thought it was funny since it seemed out of place. Adequations is a scholary word and is not colloquial. I forgot to consult the Frets and Gilmour Dictionary for the most current orthography, my mistake. (Feel I should put a disclaimer that is harmless sarcasm and not anger. I don't want to offend anyone and have to have them hijack this thread anymore). EG, Oklahoma is not faring well here. jrockbirdge, what kind of music do you play? I have been curious about the BG90s for a while. My first Gibson was with P90s and was a tone beast. Also have you had the chance to compare BG90s with GFS P90s? Hey, I dig banter. I love learning things. Adequation is a word and has a definition which I think is in keeping with my usage of the two words in question; cheap and inexpensive. Here's the definition of adequation: # equivalence; A change in the meaning of a term depending upon context That's exactly what I said. Context affords more virtue to inexpensive than cheap. I will also say that, what I consider inexpensive gear can be the same piece of equipment purchased at a blowout price. If I could get get an SRV strat for, say $999 instead of the going $2000 price tag, I'd be so stoked!!!
  5. Ratae....you just made the EXACT same point I made. EG If you said that GFS pups were better than the stock pickups found in Epi's, Squiers and Ibanez, then you made the exact same point. But you didn't exactly say that. I also, never stated that GFS pups were in the same league as boutique pickups. What I said was that they compare favorably and sometimes better than other well regarded pickups ie, Seymour Duncans, Dimarzio's, Fender and Gibsons. I also said that in this particular instance, given that he had a semi hollow guitar, that putting in the GFS Dream 180s was a reasonable suggestion based of my experience with them in semi-hollow guitars and what I have heard on this and other boards, particularly in reference to the Ibanez Artcore series of semi-hollow body guitars. I countered the dismissive tone of your first two posts, which you deleted, with a shallow but pointed jab. You decided to shadow my posts with cliches designed to obfuscate the issue as you were not presenting any articulate evidence to support your position and I called you on it. I did so as a fellow guitarist and forumite. I have no agendas. So you can take off the tin hat, stop feeling so persecuted and stand behind what you actually said and did, as I have. I have never had the occasion to single you out before and I have no problem with your opinions. But I have always championed inexpensive gear, particularly where it may be the best tool for the job at hand. And you can google that, jack!
  6. I thought everyone heard of that word? I think my wife's lawyer used it, in as I was not providing the proper adequations on The Pompatus of Love it was going to co$t me more... Adequations are what I do on my calculaterusi!! Honestly, words can have the same definition but by virtue of connotation or general usage connote differently. Thrifty brings to mind a virtue while cheap connotes a miser or a cheapskate who generally agrees immediately when you say you'll pick up the check!
  7. OP!! Don't worry. You didn't do anything wrong. These kinds of threads happen all the time hear. Guitarists are a passionate sub culture! I am glad that in between the raindrops, you got some advice that was worth giving a try. Is this the type? 'Cause that's a seriously beautiful guitar!!
  8. Burton4snow, the BG Pure 90's are fantastic pickups! I my Pure 90's! I think you'll be very pleased with the tone from clean to gain. I have owned a few sets of GFS pups and I think they're an excellent value. They were worth the purchase price, but were not in the same league as Fralin, BG, or TV Jones. I don't know why so many people are calling for internet clips to prove that boutique pups are better than budget pups. If all you plan to do is post compressed MP3 clips on internet forums, GFS are more than adequate. :poke: You gots to come over n jam with me! I agree that mp3 clips are not adequate to the task because of compression but, when comparing products, it can still be possible to hear the differences. Soloway posts MP3's and they sound luscious. Besides... my clips are so rockin n soulful, they make men weep and make women's knees buckle!!!
  9. I am going to be ordering these to try out when I get back to the States. These will be going in a Strat. I want to argue dammit! Anyone have any experience with these pups? http://yhst-50206111187217.stores.yahoo.net/gfswdoovovra.html http://store.guitarfetish.com/gfsprlitupig.html Can't say that I have but they sure do look radical. Give em a try and come back with a review!
  10. Speaking of which...frets, your pup seems to be off his leash again. This opinion, which you so freely provide, is also erroneous and makes you sound petulant.
  11. And, yes, I have heard GFS pickups. They sound just like Epi or Ibanez or Squier pickups. They're good but not great. EG And, having heard GFS pickups first hand and uncompressed, I can without hesitation, say that in my experience they have proven, to be not only better tonally than the above mentioned stock pups which have been replaced by GFS pups by the ton with glowing recommendations, but better tonally than the stock pups you'd find on many Fenders and Gibsons as well. While you're entitled to your opinion, you're opinion is not based on fact or corroborated by the combined experience of this forum. Atrox, who has a reputation for building quality guitars and has built them for people on this board, uses them and if I'm correct BG pups as well. The Dream 180's, in particular, have been used to replace the stock pickups in the Ibanez Artcore semi-hollow series. One of the first things I heard around here was how they brought those guitars to life. I have yet to say that I believed they are better than the pups the OP had or that it was the only option available to him. I simply stated what I know and what I could back up by fact.
  12. And I never said don't buy them because they are cheap. The price tag has nothing to do with it. Seriously. WTF? Are you incabable of comprehension? EG Why did you delete your first two posts?
  13. Absolutely. That's why they are standard in all $4000 guitars now. EG Like I said you have your opinion and I have mine. But if I was having trouble getting my $4000 guitar to sound right, you could bet your ass, I'd talk to Jay and Bryan first. I was in a GC recently and a fellow came in with a sweet jazz box. I can't remember the maker but was easily a $3000 to $4000 guitar. He was experimenting with some digital reverb pedal. I came over to him because I knew that he wasn't sporting a run of the mill GC guitar. As we got to talking, he explained that he had been playing out at an open mic kind of thing and had an old Peavey SS amplifier and was looking to open up his sound and give it a little more beef. He realized that getting an expensive amp would do it but he didn't have the skosh right now. He asked what I thought of the sound he was getting out of the pedal. I told him it sounded like the pedal was robbing his guitar of it's lows. I told him that for the sound he was looking for, a nice used Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue might do the trick and that he ought to consider doing that at some point just to get the full effect of his beautiful guitar. I could also have steered him towards Victoria amps which sound sublime. However, I was sensitive to his immediate need and steered him towards the Boss FDR pedal. He was using an SS and this pedal has the capacity to add warmth to SS amps. It also could add the slightest touch of overdrive for sweet fattening and a touch of reverb as well. That's what he bought. I figured that'd hold him until he got it together for a better amp. That's how I roll. Look for the right tool at the right time to do the job. I'd never tell the OP that a more expensive pup would be a waste of money. But I would also tell him that the particular pup he's asking about per my personal experience would be a good choice for a semi hollow guitar. No BS. Just facts.
  14. {censored}!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EG was just pointing out the fact that if the OP had the deniro to drop on a Deus he should at least do it the justice of installing pups that are ALSO boutique... nobody said GFS pups were junk, but we all know that they are NOT BG's, Lollars, Fralins, TV Jonses, etc... i've got Mighty Mites in my Cort X-5 and love them, wouldn't change a thing... it's kind of like dropping $800,000 on a Bentley and puting spinner hub caps from pep boys on it... Your post makes no sense. If the pups sound good in the Dues, drop em in. What difference does the cost make? I think the Dream 180's sound great in a semi hollow body guitar. The Dues he has is a semi-hollow body guitar. I linked clips of the Dream 180s in a semi hollow body guitar. Help me out here Dman. All that was left was for him to decide for himself whether or not he liked them. I never said he had to put Dream 180s in his guitar. I said that by my experience, they would sound good. All EG had to say was you get what you pay for. When it comes both to GFS or BG pups, that's just not true. Hell, I was more concerned that he wasn't happy with the expensive pups he already had in there.
  15. And I never said don't buy them because they are cheap. The price tag has nothing to do with it. Seriously. WTF? Are you incabable of comprehension? EG And I said not only does the price tag have nothing to do with it but they are also quality pups. Are you incapable of the same?
  16. He was facepalming because he suggested expensive pickups, got ganged up on, and then the op chose expensive pickups after wading through this {censored} of a thread. How bout u take a clip and stick it up your ass? Son, he was not ganged up on. He also did not simply suggest expensive pickups. Read the posts one after the other. In my experience there has always been more than one way to skin a cat. To assume that the only way to do it right costs a lot of money is silly and shortsighted. And I stand firmly behind what I said.
  17. WOW!!! Easy to see why this is your favorite..............nicely done Allen! Thanks man. That song has always been a favorite of mine.
  18. GFS pickups are cheap (for most people). Anyone that says different... well good luck remembering to breathe. Cheap and inexpensive are adequations. Now as for quality of the pickups, I am not sure. I have only had one GFS pickup and it was not to my liking. Also wanted to say you guys are the biggest bunch of girls around. Stop crying and play some guitar. The internet is supposed to be for people who can't handle real the stress of real world situations. If you can't handle the stress of the internet where are you going to turn?! The reality is that this site is for this very discussion. People who have had actual experience with products post and share those experiences. Some people feel the need to pontificate and create axioms. I go by my experience and share that with the caveat that some else's mileage may vary. Where you and I disagree, is that I breathe quite well and GFS pups do not share the qualitites of what I consider to be "cheap" pups. In fact, they are very high quality for little money. As I have said. I have heard and played with a few GFS pups. I have posted clips of what the Dream 180s sound like. I have heard many people here and on other forums extolling their quality. I am not pulling an opinion out of my butt. I respect that you have had one GFS pup you didn't like.
  19. Well just to let everyone know that was helping me I just fooled around with the pickups and found a useful tone and I'm actually digging it. Like one of the first replies said it is different from the other guitars but it has its use in my playing spectrum. It's weird sometimes I love my guitars and sometimes I hate them and I am sure alot of factors go into that. Probable most of all how I am playing that day. I try to never jump the gun that is why I come to the forum with questions. My problem is I am a gear whore so I'm always searching for some new way to teak my sound and get excited about buying some new equipment. I guess I will just focus on the Wah I want to get. Its probable going to be 535q unless somebody talk me out that one. I am also looking at the Zak Wylde one its real throaty which I kind of like in a wah. At least from fooling around with my pod wahs. I truly believe there's something in the atmosphere that either changes our hearing or something. I've had that experience of going to a guitar I love to play and for some reason, it doesn't sound right. I fret and walk away from it, come back later and it sounds fine. Crazy. But I'm glad you messed with it before changing anything because those are some very well regarded pickups. As a couple of folks have said, sometimes it's just a little tweak here and there and it's like opening up the engine on a highway!
  20. Like I said it's hilarious. The only thing that sucks is that I thought I had a whole bunch of replies to my question and half of them where a fight. I'd hate to see you guys in traffic! I generally don't go the distance with folks here anymore because it does get real silly real fast. Sorry for stomping around your thread like that. But I thought you had a good question that deserved a reasonable answer. EG's opinion is valid but from my perspective it's one side of the coin. I feel that my opinion is equally as valid. EG. I'm sorry you're ruffled but I saw your responses as dismissive of the OP's original post and I still do.
  21. You ARE a moderator. You don't have that luxury. EG I am a member here and for as long as I've been here I've championed inexpensive gear. I have had arguments with many people I consider good friends over it and they never once played that card. GFS pickups are not cheap pickups. They are inexpensive pickups. I would match up their best with almost anybody's. I have their Fatbody pickup in the neck of the telecaster Sean (Ratae) put together for me and it goes toe to toe with any neck pup I've ever heard. GFS also makes pretty damn exquisite strat pickups as well. If he sold them for the same price you buy DiMarzios, Seymour Duncans etc, We'd all be standing here gushing. Again, as far as the OP is concerned, a good way to get into inexpensive boutique territory is to look into BG pups. Better than pups I've heard at twice the price.
  22. I have had enough experience with pickups to know that most users who become accustomed to listening to high end pickups, whether they like the voicing of them or not, aren't going to be too thrilled with cheapos. I'm just trying to save they guy some headache. EG There you go again. There are tons of forumites who have upgraded their guitars with GFS pickups and the Dream 180's have been a particularly favorable pickup. Read your own responses to the posts in the sequence you posted them. I am not responding as a moderator. I am responding as a member of the club. If I were to listen to the advice you gave the OP, I'd have cut myself off from one of my most pleasurable pickup experiences ever.
  23. And here's a personal favorite of mine. http://hcbts.arkay.de/frets99/Messiah%20Will%20Come%20AgainDream%20180s2.mp3 Now this may not be the tone the OP is looking for but after he said he didn't have a lot of money to spend, I thought it might be worthwhile to look at one of the best bang for the buck inexpensive pickups out there and not summarily dismiss the option.
  24. Here are a couple of clips featuring the Dream 180s in a semi hollow guitar, the Xaviere XV 650. http://hcbts.arkay.de/frets99/Fascinatin%20JamXV650Cmin.mp3 http://hcbts.arkay.de/frets99/HeavenlyJamX650.mp3 http://hcbts.arkay.de/frets99/JohhnyGJamX650wasabi.mp3
  25. I got nothing against GFS but I don't see how they could be considered an upgrade in a duesenberg. EG I responded to what I considered a condescending response to the question. My response is based on first hand experience of a variety of GFS pickups. The ones he mentioned are wonderful and I've heard them bring sweet life to different guitars. To say it couldn't possibly help the Duesenberg is shortsighted and without factual backing. And I get a chance once in awhile to wear my guitar hat. I'm actually a seasoned vet! And I'm not a company man. I'm an unpaid volunteer. I thought EGs OT response to me was childish on top of his condescending remark to the OP. Now why don't you guys stop playing class clowns and give the OP some real info he can use. Has anybody had experience with the pickups he's talking about. Might there be a problem with the noiseless pups sounding a little cold, sterile? I don't know. I haven't used them but I have have used Dream 180s and I love their chime clean and I think they really handle overdrive beautifully.
