I'll tell you a world you DO want to live in--a world with MY AMPS!!!

  2. People, people, PEOPLE!!! You've gotten so far off topic, do you even remember what this thread is really about?!?!??

What the hell has happened?? Makes me wish I could turn the clocks back to the ol fashioned times..you know when God mattered, and men worked while the women stayed home and took care of the domestic jazz, and children had a monny and a daddy! Today its just getting twisted it used to be Adam and Eve in the Bible,,whats next Adam and Steve????

Wrong forum. You're looking for Open Jam. Thank you and have a nice day.

  4. Ah well, no biggie. The PT is probably ok, I'd say you have better than a 50% chance of that anyway. The fuse most likely saved the PT. The output transformer could've taken stress from this too though, not that I want to worry you (I'd say the OT is probably still ok), but if an arc happens that means the OT has seen considerably higher voltages than normal.

As for the rest--if you can replace the sockets that arced, that's best. If not, carbon might be under the socket (as well as on top), and depending on the material it could be through the material from pin to pin. So replacement is recommended. Cleaning with a wire brush might work but some carbon might remain and the next set of tubes could fail sooner or later.

The screen grid resistors should be checked for sure. You can follow the screen pin's connection to the resistors on the board (probably 470 ohms each) and check them with a meter.

    Good luck.

Replaced the fuse and now it blows the fuse everytime I take it off standby.AAARRRGGGHHH! I am SO STOOPID!!!

I'd say to replace the output tubes and try again. Then, perhaps the screen grid resistors blew, and/or the output sockets got carbon traces from the arcs on them. The power transformer is the last thing in this case I'd suspect (although it is possible). And if that damage happened as you described, you'd only be solving the symptom by replacing the PT, *if* the PT had died. The cause has to be fixed, which is new tubes, possibly new sockets, and possibly new screen grid resistors. If you don't take care of the rest of this, the new PT would die as well.

FWIW - James, I do occassionaly poke fun at our northern neighbors and do get annoyed sometimes at you guys, just as I do with lifelong friends and family mebers. But I will be the first to admit and acknowledge that Canada has fought bravely and died alongside Americans repeatedly through our nations history(this time around notwithstanding). Thanx.

I wish I could accept thanks, but I haven't fought in any wars. :) I will however keep that sentiment in mind when Remembrance Day rolls around.

The government here certainly isn't perfect, but that still doesn't have much to do with what you were speaking earlier. You were referring to military decisions, conquests more specifically.

I think the main point thats getting lost here,

the US is the only country that has put

major effort into liberating other countries.

Sorry, but Canada has never come close.

They have helped, but IMO it was miniscule.

Population of Canada vs. population of the USA might have something to do with how many soldiers we can afford to send out for "liberating other countries". I didn't realize this was a pissing contest...especially since I thought your point was actually that "the Canadian military hasn't done {censored} to really help anyone else in the world in a very long time".

I'm not saying that some of the USA's military actions haven't been beneficial to other countries, but to piss all over what Canada has done is either pointless or just plain insulting. And what you call "liberating other countries" might not be viewed as such all over the world in every situation, don't forget.

That's ok. He's just copying a Canadian who said it anyway, as a joke. (And that's the truth.)

Considering that by the time we take Canada dissenters like you will be silenced and confined to detention camps, it absolutely will be a cakewalk.

You'd know all about detention camps, wouldn't you.

Hey dood, I sent you a package of whale blubber, using Terrance and Phillip Express Courier. It'll arrive at your igloo Monday. Check your e-mail for the tracking number and more details. I tried calling you yesterday (by cupping my hands, putting them in front of my mouth and yelling), but you weren't home.

Hey Sean, can I come over to your igloo today? I'll take my dog sled. See you in 5 minutes.

The real truth isn't about a country demonstrating the ability to take power but the desire to take power. The ability comes from the desire.

Your post implied (strongly) that the chassis material made the difference though. I don't blame you for making an assumption based on that either since there's been so much bad information posted on teh Intarweb about amp design/construction. However I wanted you to be aware that this is how this sort of thing is perpetuated, by people making assumptions and posting about them.

For my designs, there's no discernable difference whether I use aluminum or steel for my chassis. I was relieved to discover this, since I'd used both types of material and had to decide on what to use for a new chassis. My options were open at that point.

I would, the effects loop on my VH4 is much nopiser than my dual rec

Are you implying that the steel chassis of the VH4 is somehow allowing more noise to pass through than the steel chassis of the Dual Rectifier? :)

Anyway, you should read up on the technical properties of aluminum and steel, and know what it means in the context of an amplifier (taking into account the specific layout of the amp) before you rush to judge an amp based on the material its chassis is made of. Don't be like so many others who would presume one metal is inherently superior in all cases. I've used both, and I've even done direct comparisons using the same circuit design in each.
