  1. I had no idea who he was until I opened a Guitar World and saw him in an Eastwood advert. I've still not listened to much of his music, and I'm not a fan of the Lennon or Bowie tracks he played on.

I like Bowie and Lennon fine, but know Earl Slick more from Phantom, Rocker and Slick then from anything he ever did with anyone else (aside from the Stray Cats record he played guitar on).

I know he did play with Bowie and Lennon, but am unsure what he played exactly.

The last few clips I've seen of him I haven't really dug what he has been doing or his tone, but that's just my opinion.

If you can get a copy of Cover Girl or the first PRS record you may dig his playing.

here he is recently, I'm not so into this, it seems like his playing isn't quite as sharp as the old days. On the other hand, you have to give him props for being the only guy to put a Floyd Rose on a Danelectro Longhorn!

  2. Gosh..musicians getting endorsements for free gear..the horror....the...horror.:angry39:

I don't have a problem with endorsements per say. What kind of annoys me are the people who advertise a ton of things. I mean, the ads for this (which all seem to have some sort of goofy Photoshopped background) say it's the best he's owned/played. That really makes me question the quality of the $5000 Framus he was trying to sell us a year or two ago.

I like Earl Slick. I think he's a great player. I have the Stray Cats record he is on and I think I'm probably the only one out there that bought Phantom, Rocker and Slick's debut and second album on both vinyl and cassette. I have a solo instrumental record he made as well where he has a Goldtop on some 90s type of background). I just find his marketing choices kind of goofy, but I guess he has to pay the bills.

I like GFS Jay as well. I think his marketing lingo is pretty goofy, but he's a decent guy and he fills a niche. There was a time where he was the biggest thing going on HCEG. Don't hear as much about them as we used to.

  3.

No matter how good of a player he is, I will always remember Earl Slick as the guy who wants to be in every guitar advertisement. If it were anyone else, I would probably love to have one of those guitars...

The only person worse then Slick for that is George Lynch. I liked Earl Slick in the Stray Cats, like I said. Mainly, I'll remember him as the only person I ever saw put a Floyd Rose on a Danelectro.

  4. I heard on the radio today that Tom Cruise now plays guitar, and he may tour with Warrant and sing.

I heard CC DeVille on Sirius the other day saying Cruise 'passed the test' and that he, Brett, Ricki and Bobbi have all offered Tom a spot opening for Poison.

That being said, is the movie awful to sit through or is it more an amazing bad movie like Death Wish IV The Crackdown that is very enjoyable to watch?

Also, I have not been able to find any clips of Tom Cruise singing. I would think he could probably sing ok, as he has been in show business a long time.

  5. How would adjusting the trussrod make a difference to the string tension?

In the case I'm talking about it was less about string tension and more that the guitar felt stiff. Very stiff. The rod was way tighter then it should have been loosening it and giving the guitar a few adjustments (trem claw, saddle height, etc...) really made a difference. It felt like a completely different instrument.

    YMMV

  6. When I was in college I just let MARS and Guitar Center screw me.

Example - I would build as close of a copy to a vintage guitar as I could. I would then walk in (or send a friend in) to the store and proceed to tell them I knew nothing about guitars but needed money.

I would usually get $1000 - $2000 for something that may have cost me $200 or $300 to build.

MARS in Natick had a seafoam green strat that I built up on the wall for $8500.00 for years. They gave me $1700.00 for it.

Then I would also get to laugh at the store for having a copy on the wall for big money.

People are a little more savy these days and I haven't done this in about 10 or 12 years.

I flip a lot of stuff but in your price range it may be not worth the time.

  7. I met a kid a couple of years ago who was the son of one of my wife's work colleagues. He had been mowing lawns/shoveling snow, etc. since he was like 10 or 12 and he owned two vehicles that he bought with the money he had earned and saved over the years - a Mustang (not sure of year) and a 2003 Explorer. I was very impressed with this kid. He was 15 when I met him and couldn't even drive the vehicles he already owned...
    :o

I wouldn't buy a car I couldn't have driven. When I bought a used car it was reliable and cheap for the time - 1k.

I am lucky in that I have always been a saver. I think it's more a personality thing then anything else.

It blows my mind when I see the 'must sell gear - lost job need food' posts. I love my guitars as much or more then anybody else, but before I drop money on gear I have the bills paid, money put into savings and extra on the mortgage.

Luckily, this country is going through a corrective cycle that will teach irresponsible people that having credit card balances and houses they can't afford is not a good thing.

  8. It's not a scam.

The deal is you have to send your guitar to them and then when they have it in hand they give you a lowball offer in the hopes that you'll take it.

I don't put my email in CL ads anymore - just my cell number.

It has cut down on 99% of the foolishness I used to have to deal with.

If someone is really interested they want to talk to you as soon as possible and not keep sending email.
