Members Mike Fiasco
It'll only affect the tone if it's a bad painting. The artist friend might want to have some protective clearcoat sprayed over his or her work after it's done because you may scratch it up when you're playing. There's really no downside to a painted pickguard, so go for it.

Members WRGKMC
The only problem is using paints that wont peel right off. maybe using acrylics on plastic might be best. I did one with solid black once then laquer sprayed it. It came out so - so I guess. I didnt use it long before I did something else though cause it looked a littel funkey. If the artwork is good though, it could be cool. You just need to be sure the clear coat is compatible with the paint and the paint will adhere to the plastic or the work is a waste of time. You also have a guitar pick scratching on it. I have a wooden one I used Polyurethane on. It shows a littel pick scratching but not bad. I dont think lacquer would hold up as well.
