Members yeagermeister
I just started messing with drums, and I find that I curl my toes in and tense my right foot up.... What is the proper way?
Members Dash OH drummer
no, your foot shouldn't ever be 'tense'. really when drumming you should be very relaxed. I'm assuming you're playing heel-up.....play heel down for a while till you get a feel for what you're doing
Members Kyrrinstoch
Play everything slowly, keeping your feet and legs relaxed. Once you can do this easily, then worry about building speed and precision. If you find that you're tensing up again, back off a little to where you're relaxed and keep trying. With enough practice, you'll get it.
Members rumblebelly
Yeah, start slow and relaxed. That is the key to all things for drumming I think. Even if you can only do 8th notes at 90bpm, just concentrate on being relaxed and precise. Speed comes with practice and time.

Members coolguy 34
Here's the skinny..... Next time you practice, make it a point to WATCH you foot for a while. See what's going on first. Are you tensing up while trying a double stroke, or are you tensing up at any hint of speed. I agree with the others about staying relaxed. but before you try the relaxex method, seek out the problem and then take measures. Here's some more advice, if people tell you to do things like, play basketball, ride a bike, or do any other sport to help with your bass drum foot(feet), don't listen to them! I've heard many times that playing basket ball with help your double bass playing because of the motions of the game relataed to your legs. If anything, playing basketball will make you a better BB player! when you play your drums, the motions that you're doing are approriate for strengthening the muscles needed for playing your bass drum. Cardio is much more important that strength training IMO. You asked about the "proper way".... whatever feels best to you is the proper way. Some techniques that work for other might actually hinder your playing. Keep at it and you'll be fine! Coolguy
